Thanks for the replies guys,  the consensus appears to be my fault.
Happy to hear an unbiased opinion.
You were there. When they were in front of you did you think they were wrong for doing what they did, did you stand on the brakes?
How long have you been driving?

I just slammed on the brakes.  Annoying thing is, I normally spot these things before they happen.
    15 years of driving.

With your 15 years driving experience, based on your speed  was their decision to cross your lane well judged?

It’s likely your insurer will side with you on this one. You have the right of way travelling along the road in your lane, and they have pulled across your path. Regardless of where you hit them, they had the greater duty of care as they were performing the manoeuvre.

Their only defence is that you were ‘speeding’, which is a weak defence as A) it is very difficult to prove speed, and if they were stationary before turning then you could appear to be travelling faster than you actually are
B ) if they could tell you were speeding why did they choose to turn right across your path?
Speed is more of a legal matter than an insurance matter. It all goes down to proof with insurance and as mentioned, you were established on the road.

Ask the petrol station if they have cctv, they should be able to check it for you and save it so that it isn’t written over. your insurer can request it as it is unlikely that they will give it to you due to gdpr

It is the van's fault, he tried to turn across the front of you when you were so close that you weren't expecting it, and even though you braked hard, you still hit him.
    If his only defences are

I saw a car obviously doing 50, so I tried to turn across the front of him but there wasn't time
I thought I had plenty of time but he hit me so he must have been speeding
    or my favourite-
I never saw any oncoming cars, but one hit me so I know he must have been speeding, even though I didn't see him to be able to tell

Things don't exactly look good for him.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

    Not yet.
I've emailed to ask how I would notify them of an accident online.  Prefer to fill online forms.

They crossed your path causing you to collide with the side of their vehicle.... 100% their fault... irrespective of speed unless they can prove it.... ignore those on here telling you otherwise

It doesn't matter who's fault it is, you should report it to your insurance company
