I used to use an app called ACR to record all of my calls but google, in it's wisdom, decided that it was probably illegal in some jurisdictions and stopped the number being shown. Also didn't work unless you put hands free on so a waste of time.
I struggle to understand why it's ok for you to be recorded but not to be able to record.
I use it and it does show numbers, as well as show both sides of the call. But you need to change some settings to allow it to work. (sadly can't remember what)
    Running Android 10.

    UPDATE:
The Bank have been back in contact, and decided to reimburse all the money lost plus any costs. We'd sent a complaint stressing how the lack of action taken and advice recieved (Expect call back) on the call she made that morning (Proof Emailed, Screen Shot & Itemised bill) left her open to the scam that evening. Worryingly the bank still claim no record their end of this call, and someone knew to call her that evening to try (If not, its a massive coincidence)! They advised the investigation into why it wasn't dealt with is still ongoing.

That's good result. Hopefully she will be very careful now and tells all friends and family to avoid similar scam.

Also, and probably much more importantly, the Bank figure out how a call regarding fraud wasn't dealt with or even recorded on their system.. and how scammers seemingly used knowledge of this to their advantage. The bank supposedly also wouldn't have advised she would be called back, and they could have frozen her account there and then to protect it, even if the fraud team were busy!

Is she sure it was actually her bank that she spoke to?

I mean in the old days when these things were done over the telephone the fraudster would keep the line open which prevented your phone from dialing out and the person would then "answer the call" as if they were in the banks call centre (or have a friend do it for a change of voice) and just carry on the scam.

If they were technologically astute enough to intercept the relevant electronic communications and be able to proxy an official reply that didnt get picked up by filters maybe they were able to go further? Certainly buying themselves a few hours whilst you await the promised call back would have been useful.

Unless you're GCHQ or a phone network, it's practically impossible for an end-user to verify who they are speaking to, whether you initiate the call or if you are called.

Would still raise the question how the Bank can tackle this issue going forward, as they advise to call them to report fraud on their website.. if it is possible to intercept these calls, and you've already been targeted by fraudters to setup this scenario, then they may need to update their advice. Maybe an online secure chat.. but not practical for some of the less technologically gifted, elderly or most vunerable. My Girlfriend will now be going into the bank rather than calling as she doesn't trust anyone on the phone now.
