  • I totally agree Falafels with what you are saying & a possible dispute on record is not a good thing when selling for sure ... on the other hand i don't feel it would be in my best interest to lie about it being a garage when it's not ? Also i do not feel at present that this will be a temporary arrangement but more a convenient one ?

I doubt very much the son will want to live in a garage permanently.  Would you?
  • More likely to be long term than short term ratio wise , in my view they have it well sussed ..keep their home to themselves privacy wise being retired , whilst owning a couple of holiday homes & a rental flat at the same time !

Do you know this for certain, or is it a guess? A friend of mine has a very well-appointed garden shed which she used to rent out as an air’b’n’b pre Covid. It was effectively an outdoor bedroom. From what you’ve said here, it sounds just as likely that the garage will be used as an additional bedroom. Planning permission isn’t normally needed for a garage conversion, though building regs will need to be adhered to... but there’s nothing to say they aren’t.

Before going any further you need to find out exactly what’s going on, or it could create completely unnecessary bad feeling.

Garage conversions can be done so well it can become a comfortable long term living solution. For example if son is and continues to be single and garage has been comfortably and converted to a good standard why will he move out and pay rent?
Please watch “tiny living” and see how fashionable it can be!
The garage being converted though is no worse than living in a terrace property?

You think being single means a grown man is going to be perfectly happy living in his mum and dad's garage?  Single people are also people you know and they tend to want a bit more than that the same as couples do!
  • Half of the garage is in my garden though 30 ft away , would it be okay if i attached a structure to the half that's in my part then to provide bedroom space for my hard up son ...wonder if they'd turn a blind eye to that like they expect me to ?!!

If the garage is actually in your garden then there's a rather more serious problem going on! I presume it's neighbouring your garden?

A friend's daughter moved into a tent in her garden for most of the summer - how different is this?

But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.
