I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

You're asking an impossible question ... a 2-year-old car might be a dream and have no problems, yet a brand new car might have endless issues - new does not guarantee problem-free.
As it happens SWMBO got a new Dacia Sandero (1.0L non-turbo) in April last year. We've not had any issues with it. (It replaced a 57 plate Jazz that had seen better days. We were looking for a recent 2nd hand car but the price of the Sandero new was better value than equivalent other 2nd hand cars that were 2-3 years old).1 -

I understand all electric
I understand hybrid (like Toyota / Lexus)
I understand plug-in hybrid
I do not really know what is a "mild hybrid"? As mentioned, Suzuki offer them. I think it is also what Ford mean when they promote their cars as "hybrid". It seems to me the car cannot be driven in all-electric mode but only really has stop-start, which is not very "hybrid" at all and lots of cars have "stop-start" but are not called "hybrid".
I can only assume I have got this wrong.0 -

That probably explains it as well as anything. A mild hybrid is basically Stop/Start+1 -

I have a Dacia Logan bought from new, just the basic entry model and although I do low mileage, I can say it is as good a car as I have ever bought new with only one exception.
I get 56 mpg, no road tax and insurance this year was £157 fully comp.
3 years old now, sailed through the MOT and certainly no complaints from me about any road noise at 70, I can't recommend it high enough.0 -
It is really just a way to add regenerative braking, and therefore increase overall fuel efficiency. In the Olden Days there were a few buses that used a big flywheel to do the same job- the bus was slowed by speeding up the flywheel, and then the rotational energy stored in the flywheel was available to help accelerate it again.GKN are supposedly working on bringing them back to modern buses.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

The small electric motor makes for big fuel savings in town, as it gets the car rolling before the ICE kicks in. Less effective on the open road, as it will be running on the ICE most of the time.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I thought the Prius is a full hybrid. You can actually drive it in all electric mode0
