As someone on this thread said, you get what you pay for.
Properly marked part-worns? With the words "PART-WORN" indelibly and permanently marked in a sidewall, in letters at least 4mm high?

Because if they're breaking the law on that, are they also breaking the law on properly inspecting them to check for damage...?

    https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1994/3117/regulation/7/made
You need to get out more, I've never been 'done' for an illegal tyre so as I said 'crack on'
Should we take that as "Oh. Yes, you're right - it turns out the supplier's broken the law"?
Take it however you like If it's that important for you to be right, it's a free world (for now)

Well, not quite totally free. Freedoms are tempered by restrictions enshrined in law. And, in this case, it's a law that's been in place for over a quarter of a century. I even linked directly to it for you.

Still, if you're happy to penny-pinch by buying part-worns off people who don't follow the law on marking, so probably don't follow it on inspection, either...

<shrug> I'm not the one getting suspiciously defensive over a scofflaw scrappy.

Does seem strange that they'd follow all the onerous technical part of the regulation, though, and simply fail to bother with the trivially easy marking, don'cha think?

  • Suspiciously defensive? your assuming AGAIN!

Does it seem strange that some of us on here might have friends in the tyre trade that look after us on prices?
Whilst it may appear to you I'm penny pinching, my logic still stands I put cheap LEGAL tyres on my cars and expensive tyres (£350 a set!!!!) on my bike but it's been an interesting exchange and for that I thank you.

    Well done. That's my point.
You are not putting legal tyres on - tyres sold as part-worn LEGALLY must be marked as such, as well as inspected to a certain standard.
  • And you love making a point don't you, Thanks again Inspector, lol

I use £20 part worns on car where It's luck of the draw, had a couple of decent Michelins out of the lucky dip box recently but I haven't noticed any radical difference in handling/braking (mind you we are talking about a 'soppy as a sack' Citroen here) between the Michelins or the budget brands etc whereas My bike gets treated to Bridgestone s22,s or If IOM is on next year Bridgestone RS11's unbelievable grip!!!

As someone on this thread said, you get what you pay for.
What is a lucky dip box?
Whatever part worns my tyre pal has in at the time. He gets a lot from Germany where tyres are replaced when they get down to 6mm (I think) he did tell me the reason why part worns are not as bad as people think and the '6mm' German tyre rules once but I can't remember exactly what he said so if people want to dispute that assertion, well crack on. All I know is i get cheap decent life left tyres off him AND drink all his coffee whilst he's changing them :)

Fair do’s;..I’m not able to dispute anything btw coz I know absolutely nothing about bikes. I’ve only been a passenger on a bike once.

Decades ago an old mate of mine gave me a lift home from the pub very late one Sunday night on his pride and joy..a Kawasaki 750 2-stroke.

The journey was exactly 1-mile between two sets of traffic lights along a wide, flat 30mph A-road. I was expecting a sedate run at 30’ish mph;...my chauffeur had other ideas though.

When the lights changed he set off at full tilt and carried on accelerating as hard as he could, for as long as he could, until he needed to start braking a mile down the road.

Even though I was well oiled from the pub I was absolutely terrified...no passenger crash helmet in those days;...we must have been doing 100mph by the time he started braking.

I do remember that when he started braking (hard!) we came to a halt fairly quickly so I assume he wasn’t  on budget tyres!

Not much fun to be fair being a pillion, I've never liked it and no crash helmet either, your a brave soul lol.

Regarding the tyres, he probably does them me at cost or near cost as he's a good mate and we've done each other favours for years. He does of course sell all the top brand new tyres and I must admit there is nothing quite like a brand new tyre, the look of it, the smell etc but 'it's just not worth it on my car, if I put 4 brand new tyres on my Citroen it would double the value of the car lol.

Bike is different matter of course, nobody in their right mind would imo would put budget tyres on a missile!! and although I'm sure people who drive cars like M5's, 911's, RS4's etc can tell the difference in handling between budget and top spec tyres I can't on my car but definitely can on my bike.
Brave..no;..a more accurate description would probably have been:...naive, foolish and p1$$ed!  :D

We've all done it lol. You say it was a Kawasaki 750 2 stroke? If it's the one I think your talking about that is the H2 750, a 750 'triple' known as 'the widowmaker' back in the day, it saw off many a rider who couldn't handle it's performance. Very collectable today and worth between 15-20K!!!! nothing like hitting a 2 stroke power band for making you terrified!

I don’t know the technicalities but I do vividly  remember that it was a fairly new Kawasaki 750 2-stroke;...it’s been imprinted on my mind ever since he dropped me off that night,... and then disappeared up the road faster than Barry Sheene.

I don’t know what became of him but I hope he managed to exorcise his motorbike speed-demons and didn’t end up as just another ‘statistic’.
