It’s not always silly high though especially with the RM prices and also having to account for eBay and PayPal fees.

i recently sold 2 collectable toys, both went for around £39 one to France and one to Italy and buyers only paid about an extra £8 , and if I had done my own postage I probably would have charged about that anyway - not that I would ship to Italy ever.

i did have an American buyer pay quite a lot though as he bought three items and expected postage to be combined and the total cost was rather silly as you cannot combine on GSP sales.

Also, if you are only selling to UK buyers then you may have a potential audience of 5 million? (however many people use Ebay in the UK). If you add GSP to your listings you can sell to USA, Japan, Australia etc all of which I have sold to under GSP and your potential target market is global and could be 50 million people (or more).

Obviously, collectibles, antiques, vintage etc is more likely to sell on GSP than random PS4 games but it costs YOU nothing extra to enable GSP and simplifies the shipping of overseas orders massively - at an extra cost to the buyer.

So, is the overall consensus that the GSP is something worth doing? I've not really bothered with it as the few overseas sales I had were always disastrous, but if Ebay are taking the blame for everything once it leaves their forwarding centre, then maybe it's worth doing for a while, just to see if it all works out?

Thats a helpful post from Kangoora ..in my case it answers shall we have a go and see what happens .
Not sure how to decide if a item is worthy of overseas GSP just yet but if it costs nothing to list and this GSP is safe then why not.
I am only using buy it now and sometimes add best offer if the item is not selling after weeks....does the listing format matter?

Listing format makes no difference. I have GSP enabled on all my items, both on my business and my private accounts. The only time I physically remove the option is where I’m not sure if an item is allowable overseas as sellers are responsible for that, so in the rare cases I sell make up or beauty items, or some of my military books which may be banned in some Areas like Germany and Scandanavian countries. I don’t sell anything electrical, but if I did I would remove those from GSP as well.

It's not just the expensive items either, although GSP is expensive for the buyer so the more expensive an item the less proportionally is the GSP charge. I tend to fill in the weights & dimensions fairly accurately on the listing - not actually sure if that makes any difference to the GSP cost.

One sale that sticks out in my memory was a small "Thelwell cartoon" jigsaw, I think it was only up for something like £11.99 including P&P. It eventually went to a riding school in California who probably paid double the price when GSP charges were added in.
  • I think this says it all about the "high fees" one can obtain by using global shipping program.
    Buyer paid
    Total £47.72 =
    £15.48 x2 items
£5.80 P&P which would have been reduced to £2.90 if it had been as I listed to be delivered in the UK
    £26.44 Global Shipping Program
Now airing on the side of caution by Royal Mail fully insured, with signature delivered in 5-7days it costs £13.90 so yes I completely agree there are huge profits for someone in the chain of Global Shipping Program but it is NOT THE SELLER WHO GAINS!
Another interesting fact is I looked at the vintage collectables I should have been selling as posting abroad and turns out I am not and the only option for me to list this as selling abroad is yes you guessed it Global shipping program because they are over weight for all the Royal Mail options! Ebay really has gone done hill for sellers I can't believe the media give Amazon such a hard time when Ebay has turned into such a greedy dictator!
While I appreciate the cup of tea suggestion it will not hit the spot I was talked into doing the gluten challenge I have only done just over a week, and I am regretting it, I hope death comes quickly........but after one more bite of something wheat, a toasted teacake, pizza, bacon butty, egg mayonnaise sandwich, tiger bread, anything puff pastry, oh why did I listen to them!  And yes they all go nicely with a cup of tea, MMmmm tea.

Sellers can gain though. You may have an item that you don't want to sell outside the UK for various reasons.
GSP may bring in more buyers where GSP takes some of the damaged in transit risks so you don't have to.

That buyer would not have purchased your items if it was not for the GSP option.

Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...

  • I could be wrong but I believe GSP deals with customs charges and clearance as well, so the buyer pays the GSP fee and nothing further. At least, that's how I understood it when I've considered items from abroad sent via the GSP, anyway.

Plus for the seller there is no comeback as long as they safely get it to their national hub, because eBay take on the responsibility for the package after that. I guess part of the price (that the buyer pays) goes towards an insurance of sorts with eBay itself.
