It was life and death situation, thanfully we were luck as dad pulled up a few feet away from the emergency phone and i think intially a police Range Rover came, made us feel safer and then an AA van I think - so its not always safe to change the tyre ones self best to wait for the breakdown and some of these tyres have been over tightened with those air guns at fitters and very hard to undo especially when dark, wet and cold.

Are you sure it wasn't a Land Rover?  Or maybe an 'Evoke'? Just asking for a friend....

Regarding changing it yourself, that's all well and good and I've changed plenty in my time, but when I had a tire go on the M1 in January in the dark there was no way I would be crouching down in the hard shoudler to change the drivers side wheel.
No, the general advice on motorways is to just get out the car and behind the barrier. I might be tempted to change it once the traffic wombles arrive - they can do the hivis traffic-blocking, and I'll get the hell out of dodge nice and quickly...
In any case when the AA arrived the wheel nuts wouldn't budge until he got his air tool out and even then the wheel only came away with a couple of firm blows from his trusty lump hammer!
Well, yes, basic preventative maintenance beforehand does help... Making sure wheelnuts aren't overtight, and a smear of copaslip on the centrebore to stop the alloy wheel corroding to the hub/disc...

Is there any car that Sweets hasn't owned? Their garage must have more luxury marques than all of Mayfair!

A Vauxhall Astra???   OMG can you imagine the shame of stooping so low.

    What would the neighbours think?
    😇
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

I don't know if it counts but they've had memory loss, something that is fairly common.

yes, I do carry a rudimentary tool kit in the car and probably at a push could have sorted it in different circumstances, however this was the company pool car and when the tyre decided to disintegrate, I got to the shoulder and realised there was not even any breakdown instructions in the vehicle (my fault - should have checked before setting out). Fortunately my AA policy covered me in any vehicle so a quick phone call to them and I sat behind the barrier waiting for him (or her) to turn up. Was less than an hour I think but big respect to the guy for sitting there in the rain trying to change a wheel whilst traffic whizzing past just a couple of feet away.

The other option is run flat tyres but I'm not too sure which cars they can be fitted to other than BMW's a marque we have never owned.

    Except for this one..
