Of course they still work as a meter, but they no longer work as smart meters, so therefore your smart meter no longer works as intended. All along the Gov & suppliers are encouraging us to use smart meters that will mean no more estimated bills & being able to keep close eye on what you are using. Then they give us smart meters that revert to dumb meters as soon as you change supplier - utterly pointless, and although they say these meters will eventually be able to work as intended.... well lets just wait and see.

How long have you been away from Hydro for, because don't be so confident that the IHD will always work. Your assertion that "its connected to the meter remotely and always will be", sounds like the sensible thing to happen even if the tariff costs in it are wrong, but that's not always what happens.

For example, I know of someone who had a British Gas smart meter installed, couple of years later they switched to another supplier. As expected for a SMETS1 meter it didn't work with new supplier so they had to go back to reading it themselves and submitting readings. The IHD continued to work for a number of months but then stopped connecting to the smart meter. Couple of years later they switched back to British Gas. IHD still wouldn't connect and BG weren't getting readings from the smart meter so sent out an engineer. The IHD is now working, but BG are only getting the gas readings, and not the electric, and it's been that way for months now due to Coronavirus.

I've just moved house and it has a Scottish Power smart meter, I've moved to another supplier though, and despite it being a Scottish Power smart meter and usage stats appearing in my online account for the meter for a couple of weeks before the switch went through, they managed to estimate both the opening reading and closing reading. So not really fit for purpose (or examples of how some of the big 6 suppliers are a bit rubbish).

FYI smets2 meters retain full functionality when switching between suppliers, providing the gaining supplier supports them. That said there's been the odd report of smets2 meters still not working in smart mode with the new provider on MSE but such cases are in the minority. Certainly nowhere near the levels of smets1 meters going into dumb mode after switching suppliers.

... and the first round of adopting SMETS1 into the DCC is happening now as well so at least the process has begun.
It does require new levels of integration between the DCC and the suppliers to access the SMETS1 data via the DCC but at least it is in progress now.

    How do you know this?

Why was that an irrelevant link? I stated earlier that there have been the OCCASIONAL reports of smets2 meters still not being smart after moving
suppliers so I provided a link confirming that. Are you really that thick?
