Anyone with good experiences with smart meters?

Hi All
I'm currently with British Gas (they were the cheapest for me on the MSE comparison a while ago!) and they've offered me a smart meter, I was waiting for SMETS2 to start rolling out before I went for one which is now the case, however people do seem to have a lot of negative things to say about them.
I appreciate forums normally only attract the posters who are having issues, has anyone had theirs installed (SMETS2) and has your experience been positive? I want to go for it but some of the feedback has made me nervous..

Most installation of smart meters is contracted out , BG don't do the installation. Most of the other companies use the same contractors , I think octopus are the only ones employing their own teams .

Hi,a meter is a meter it records what you use, forget about the smart functionality, take a meter reading at least once a month and notify your provider. Also set up a wee spreadsheet, update monthly to keep your eye on usage and payments.2

Happy with my smets2 meters installed last year through E.ON, they even retained full functionality after I moved to EDF recently. I suspect there are more satisfied smets2 customers than there are unhappy ones, like you say people mostly post when they want to complain.1

Yes, I no longer have to get on hands and knees to read the meters, and at my age thats a definite bonus.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.1 -
Are you talking of both gas and electric supply ?dellboy102 said:Hi AllI'm currently with British Gas (they were the cheapest for me on the MSE comparison a while ago!) and they've offered me a smart meter, I was waiting for SMETS2 to start rolling out before I went for one which is now the case, however people do seem to have a lot of negative things to say about them.I appreciate forums normally only attract the posters who are having issues, has anyone had theirs installed (SMETS2) and has your experience been positive? I like my smart meters it saves me going outside to read the meters and since the display is within my sight line I can tell when the washing machine is finished and the kettle boiled etc.1

We have British Gas smart meters and we don't have a problem with them. The IHD saves me having to go outside to get meter readings, although we do occasionally check that they are reading correctly and that BG are recording the right readings on our account.
Having the IHD in the kitchen has also highlighted to us on more than a few occasions now that we have left something switched on that shouldn't be that would otherwise have cost us dearly.1 -

Yep both gas and elec.Thank you all for the replies, I think the general concencus seems to be SMETS2 will be fine..Our meters are under the stairs and for some reason the gas is towards the bottom step so you almost have to lie down to get a reading so the smart meter would help with that if they do work ok.0 -
This a lie, British Gas employ a lot of meter fitters, my ballpark estimate is about 1700. British Gas do fit the smart meters themselves. I wouldn't be suprised if they subcontracted some of the work out.Browntoa said:Most installation of smart meters is contracted out , BG don't do the installation. To the OP, Providing that the stars align and the smet2 meters commission ok, you shouldn't have any problems. You will only read about the negative aspect of smart metering, because people only come on the internet to complain and moan.2
