A final word from me on the advantages of a modern "4K" TV. Having watched standard definition programmes on both my "old" 1080p  set and the new 4K set this weekend, I can say that the upscaling on the new set is much better, the pictures are sharper all round, and the colours are less muddy.
  • I would hope that if i'd just replaced a 10 year old tv with a brand new one, it looked a little bit better!
Just like i would a pair of shoes :)

Thank you for the advice, I went for an LG in the end and I love it. A vast improvement on my previous telly. I absolutely love how clear the colors are.
Which model did you go for ?

Just to clarify ,SD broadcasts never looked good on the plasma TV even when it was new   :)

Unless it was a Pioneer Kuro plasma. My 13 year old Pioneer plasma (42" Kuro) still beats many modern TVs for SD content, motion handling and black levels.

Couldn't afford a Kuro !!  :)  Had/have a 51" Samsung - motion and colours are still ace but it never liked SD broadcasts and is a !!!!!! for reflections on a bright day.

Yeah Kuros were very expensive back then. Back around 2007, I paid £1700 for my 42" Kuro but more than a decade later, I'm still very impressed by its picture. Ok it can't do full HD (ts only 720p) but on a 42" screen the difference isn't great.
It also makes a very good heater in Winter! lol

Perhaps it was just your plasma TV that wasn't very good :)
Or you didn't have it set up properly?
Ah, Samsung, say no more :)

Not everyone could afford a top of the range Pioneer Kuro as I said earlier - £1700 for a 42" ?  :o
