At the risk of sounding like I'm blowing my own trumpet, Virgin's resolution to the problem was already suggested by myself earlier in the thread - replacement handset.

I thought you were suggesting OP etc. should buy a handset - (this is a money saving forum )
Virgin are now providing replacement handsets.

Virgin are now providing replacement handsets.

The point was valid though - a replacement handset (whether the OP bought one or the network supplied it or however they "got" one) would solve the issue alluded to.

There is money saving, and then there's "too old, chuck it away".
