Headphones advice needed

Pretty much all surround sound headphones are just stereo and use audio trickery to simulate surround sound. The XBox One will do surround sound on any set of stereo headphones plugged into the controller and it works quite well. Even with the best surround sound headphones, even those that have multiple speakers in each earpiece you'll not get the same sound as you will with a set of speakers properly placed in the room.donnajunkie said:I then got more doubts because i asked if they can handle 5.1 sound and rather than say yes or no or yes but they downmix to stereo they just said the headphones are stereo.

Can you believe sony have told me that they arent licenced to work with their sony ps4. So i now doubt its worth risking so much cash for something that might not work with our devices. I have seen these below and wonder if they will also work with our tv and music system. Also would the cheaper set be good enough. My one concern is i have no need for a mic as i dont do online gaming. Can the mic be turned off?

I have just remembered that when i tried connecting my phones in ear headphones to the tv i got sound interference and when i sought advice i think i was told it was due to the inbuilt mic. So does this mean i should avoid any headphones with an inbuilt mic if i want them to work with the tv?0

How many connector bands does the plug of the headphone lead have?donnajunkie said:I have just remembered that when i tried connecting my phones in ear headphones to the tv i got sound interference and when i sought advice i think i was told it was due to the inbuilt mic. You might need something like this to split the connections for headphones and microphone.

Just one connection. I think i was getting hissing when i connected it to the tv. And people told me it was because i was using phone headphones that have a built in mic which does not work with a tv. it struck me today that its possible i would get the same issue if i bought some gaming headphones because they have built in mics.Cornucopia said:

i have also read the specs of the gaming headsets again and it seems they arent noise cancelling.
it really shouldn't be this hard to find headphones that do what we need.0 -

There are various formats of 3.5mm plug, with varying levels of compatibility in different applications.

That reminds me that someone mentioned the relevance of the different sections. The phones headphones have 4 sections. Is having a fourth section the main reason why they didnt work properly with the tv? If a set of headphones only has 3 sections can i have confidence the same issue wont happen even if it has a mic?Cornucopia said:donnajunkie said:Just one connection. And just to add, would connecting via bluetooth make the 3 or 4 section connector issue irrelevant? I am just trying clarify whether its having a built in mic or whether its the 4 sections that can cause an issue.0

It *could* be the 4 sections that are causing the problem. In theory, it's possible for the TV's headphone socket to ignore the microphone connection, although it may not be set up like that.
If you connect via Bluetooth it shouldn't be an issue.
Headphones that do not have a microphone usually have a 3-connector 3.5mm plug.1 -
I notice though the fourth picture has 3 sections and says one is for a mic.Cornucopia said:
