Does it come up with a drone like voice saying "Take me to your dealer"?  An alternative version of "Take me to your leader"... ;)

Sorry I have a follow up question on this as it seems people on this thread know about servicing and BMWs! ;-)
When the 'BMW service needed' light shows up, how do you know if its referring to an MOT or an actual service? I had the service needed indicator on so I had it looked at. Turned out that I had to amend the MOT due date within the vehicle status section and it reset (I had the MOT done outside of BMW). I've had my current BMW since 2016 and the service light hasn't shown up apart from when I've needed to reset the MOT. Either my car is in very good condition or i'm a really slick driver! Should I be worried and if I take it to BMW to look at, how do I ensure I'm not being taken for a ride?

You haven't had ANY maintenance done for four years?

Apart from the MOT stuff, new tyres, etc...no I can't think of anything. The light has never shown up. I took it to BMW in the last year of my service and they said only bring it when the light shows up.
The 'ANY' in capitals obviously means you think its not right?

Depending on the age of your car, you look in your iDrive system and it will tell which element of the service is required. If it's a Vehicle Inspection then this is the car's MOT.

How old is your car and what model? Have you actually read the car's user manual?

I don't understand how that helps the OP's question?
Mercs do that as well as some ohter marques but they do not do it all themselves, you have to confirm the message so its not telling the dealer until you ok it. It is your choice whether you take in in to your local dealer, somewhere else or another makes delaer or not at all.

£680 for a "full" service seems extortionate.  Are you at the age / mileage where you need a cam belt change or similar?
Not when you keep the bigger cars and OP's car may be a 6/7 series and the M cars cost a lot more. The Mers cost more than the Land Rovers. The S class we have costs more to service than the rang Rover.

S class had her B service a while back - almost 1 k for 14k mile car - standard oil and filter change, air filter done, fule filter and checks, so-called cheacks and reset the service indiactor and a so-called free wash in and out close to one k
ps - brake fluid my OH tells me was doen as well

Indeed. The variable servicing will include a maximum time between servicing - likely two years.
