The MOT must have come as real shock though.1

Funnily enough I was just going to mention the MOT.bigadaj said:The MOT must have come as real shock though.
It was either due or not.
No need to scan a key to find that out !!

Most BMWs are on 24 month/20k miles service intervals so not really all that different to most manufacturers when taken on an annual average.CasualBagger said:
True enough - it's only £430 for a petrol 3-series. Bargain.Grumpy_chap said:
Although the OP did not say what BMW they drive, there is nothing 'random' or 'typical' about an M3. Not even amongst BMWs.CasualBagger said:
I just picked a random 40k mile M3 on Autotrader and ran it through BMWs website cause I was curious.Grumpy_chap said:£680 for a "full" service seems extortionate. Are you at the age / mileage where you need a cam belt change or similar?
Arrived at £695 for:
- oil and filter
- climate control filter
- air filter
- spark plugs
So yeah circa £700 is normal for BMW. I think some of the engine layouts require you to take the engine bay apart to change spark plugs.
The moral of the story is simply this: Don't buy a BMW.

BMW not knowing what service was needed is rather poor - given the registration and the mileage and their access to BMW data, it's reasonable to expect they should have been able to assess that it needed a major service and have given you an accurate quote.
That said, they did phone you very quickly after you dropped off the car to tell you about the error and that the cost would be a lot higher, giving you a choice on whether to proceed with the work. You would have been quite within your rights to decline it, return to the garage, collect the car and look elsewhere for another garage to do the work.
There is some inconvenience but their behaviour seems reasonable given the situation. It wasn't like they carried out the work without getting your approval first.0 -
Actually they're not. As mentioned, they're on what they call Condition Based Servicing (CBS), which is variable and based on the condition of individual service items. For example you may get an oil service come up at 18,000 miles then a brake check at 22,000, although most service centres would bundle them both in at the same time if they were that close together.JohnDorian said:

That's the point though, they need access to the car, specifically the car key to get an accurate picture of the car's data. As explained, that's how BMW's are serviced.Jonesya said:BMW not knowing what service was needed is rather poor - given the registration and the mileage and their access to BMW data, it's reasonable to expect they should have been able to assess that it needed a major service and have given you an accurate quote.

Must be a pretty old BMW. Last BMW we had notified the dealership itself to say it was needing a service
