If you cycle the range will increase. 2 mile cycle is only 10 mins.

I live around a mile from my nearest station. It’s a (mostly) flat, easy 15 min walk, in a residential area. My friend bought her house in a road much nearer to the station. Not only did she pay quite a large premium for saving herself 10 minutes of walking time in the morning and evening, but as she lives so near to the station, she also has to pay around £150/year for a parking permit in order to park her car anywhere near her house. (Note that this doesn’t mean she has a designated resident parking bay, it just means that she is allowed to use a space if she can find one!) Something to bear in mind when looking at properties that are very close to rail/tube stations?

As an ex commuter, When I was looking for a house, the maximum I would consider is around a 30 min walk to a station.

Rented a property which was 0.5miles to train station like 10-15 minute walk! I like walking but I didn’t like it as part of my commute! So I found that 0.5miles a big bother when I need to go somewhere. For rental I will tolerate it but for purchase I want less than a 5 minute walk to the train station which is what I got now. It’s very close but not so close that I hear the trains as such. Also I made sure that I have my own drive to park so as not to worry about paying for residence permits and so as not to struggle for parking.

I think there is a big difference depending on whether you are London/big city or the rest of the country. In a city 5 minutes walk is considered the sticks. In a non rural but not city area can often be a 20 minute drive to the train station, only to miss the train and wait 3 hours for the next
