Distance to Station you would consider?

  • Depends on too many factors. Where we used to live the station was about 3 miles (straight line), but I drove to a different station about 9 miles away.  It took me about the same length of time (city centre/rural roads), the station was one stop closer to work (therefore cheaper) and, crucially, the station had free parking.  What I spent in diesel I saved in fares and parking.

I think it depends on the route as well - is it one with lots of trains (or tubes) or is it a quieter station with trains every, say, half hour? We live about 0.8 miles / 17 mins walk from our nearest station, so you have to allow 20 mins really, and then trains to each destination aren't that frequent, so if you mistime it and miss one you are potentially waiting another 20 mins/half hour for the next train. So although fine for occasional trips in to London or whatnot, it would be a pretty frustrating commute to do every day.

I live 25mins(1.1-1.3) walk from the station I think that would be too much for a regular commute.
Cycling would be 7-10mins+ lockup time which would be OK.
Car 4-12 depending on traffic to station car park, or shorter time to a nearer/cheaper all day with a 8 min walk.

The station carpark daily rate is more than the return  taxi so that would be a car based back up for occasional use.
£5pd for 260 work days with a season ticket for regular use of car..

in our location house to station  bus based backups does not work well but that can be a consideration  if on a good bus route walk most days but have the bis if don't feel like it or it very wet.

Guess I am saying for a regular commute I would want nearer if walking without back up options.

I think it so depends on the entire commute, the station is just a small element, Are we talking a 15 minute walk through London lit streets or dark country lanes, are we talking free ample parking at or around the station or extortionate day rates.
Where else does that station take you ?

I'd like my next purchase to be virtually on the doorstep of a tube station - but it'll be unlikely that'll actually happen. I think up to a mile of actual walking would be ok in most circumstances - we are all trying to get fitter!
  • agree with others. Depends on loads of things and most importantly what it normal for the area.   I would personally class a station with 15 miles as being good transport links but then i live in the middle of nowhere really.
Ask someone in london if they consider a 15 mile journey to the nearest station acceptable and you will get a different answer.

Equally i know loads of people who will say 20 minute walk or 20 minute cycle is fine for them.  The difference in distances there is going to be a lot.  And again, im in an area where a 20 minute cycle isnt stressful.  Do that in a city and its a different experience.

Everyone is different so they will draw their own conclusions
  • Another person who would go on the entire route, including the reliability of the trains/timetable.  I live 300 yards from a village train station.  2 trains an hour in rush hour.  Unfortunately it is Northern R(f)ail.  After trying to commute with the horrible paceman trains that were overcrowded and timing extremely unreliable I gave up and now drive to the office (well before Covid I did).

I don't think you can really get a meaningful answer to this question.

We have two train stations that are both about a half an hour easy walk from our house. Not something you would want to do every day, especially in the midst of winter but fine for the odd occasion that we use the train. So far once in a little under 18 months.

Proximity to a train station isn't really a deal breaker for us. It was the commute by car that was important.

If you are working in the city doing 12-14 hour days, you need a quick commute, and a mile to the station might not be great.

If you are doing a more 9-5 job, it's totally fine.

All depends on personal circumstances and preferences. A mile doesn't strike me as too long for most people.
  • With so many now and in the future working from home station distance becomes less and less important.

There are vast areas of the UK more than 5 miles from a station, but ah the urbanites and their blinkers (me included)
