Distance to Station you would consider?

I'll be placing my property on the market shortly so will be looking at upsizing but im curious as to how far distance wise to the nearest train station would people consider? At the moment im looking as close to a train station as possible but wondering if 1 mile is too far to look?

  • That's only a 15 minute walk. Not too far at all.

I had a 1 mile walk to the station for a couple of years, it would be fine for me.
  • Really depends on the actual route.

A 0.5 mile journey as the crow flies could be pretty bad if there are lots of busy roads to cross. Also off-putting if the area is unsafe at night.

Going to the area that the property is in and simulating the walk to and from the station a couple of times in various weathers will give you a more accurate answer. Not everyone has the same walking capacity.

I agree with this. I always put the house address to the station on google maps when looking at properties then if I view the property I will walk to and from the station.

I think 1 mile actual walking distance is fine. I'm looking for that or less to the station. How far the listings state is always as crow flies so in reality will be further.

Depends if it's for a commute into London.

If central or inner London, people will usually want something less than 10 mins' walk. If greater London or a longer commute, people usually consider up to a mile.

(Just generalising, obviously not the same for everyone.)

Depends on how much it adds to the overall commute.  I'd be looking for 10 minutes max, but then I'm in Lonodn and it was a good day if the commute was less than an hour and half.

I guess it all depends on the walking route to the station (use google
maps for this) as well as how fast you walk. For us, we didn’t want anything more than a 1 mile ideally - approx 15 minutes. We’re lucky and the house we’re buying has a station about 5 min walk away. Close enough to walk but far enough so you can’t hear the actual trains.

Mine is ¹/2 mile, apparently and one of the attractions to the property. In theory a short walk, as it is as the crow flies, nosing in shops on the way to / from it. I was looking for up to 1 mile from a station when looking for a home.
