I have never known of anyone getting an outdoor bin for free. Refuse collection is free at the point of access, but is obviously paid for through council tax.

Can you not just buy black bags and store them inside until it is bin day? That's what I do, but then I generate v little rubbish.

My council charges for bins now, they used to provide the recycling bins free but then the cuts from central government came in.  They won't collect anything that isn't in an official bin, or special bags for the houses or flats that don't have storage space for the wheelie bins.

My council provides wheelie bins for waste FOC for all households, even if lost, damaged or stolen. Recycling boxes are another matter entirely, and those are charged for. As is the green waste collection.

That's interesting as it is the total opposite where I live.   You have to pay for the black bins but the recycling boxes are free and free to replace if they get lost/stolen.

My council have to pay for replacement bins even if stolen (as happened with one of mine). Seems a bit of a postcode lottery.

And I guess it was the council who broke it when collecting the rubbish.

It's normal for my council.  We had to pay for the general waste bin (£30 at the time 8 years ago, but is now £51.25) when we moved into our new build.  Recycling and garden waste bins are provided free of charge.  But since we paid for the bin, we were also able to take it with us to our next house - after checking with the solicitor and warning the new owners they'd need to order one - since the one for that house was mysteriously absent.

I have to pay for green waste collection but the bin is free as is any replacement. But I can understand the charging, not worth getting worked up about tbh. Its the cost of a couple of nights out (not that we have as many of them at the moment).

Thanks for all the feedback guys.I paid for the bins this morning. £78. I'll be putting our house number on them. As this is a new estate we have moved to with thirty plus new properties I'm not risking some one trying to avoid buying bins and helping themselves to one of mine (I have had one go missing in the past)

Totally agree with that plan. Both my bins ended up next door this week, my green bin has this years permit on, theirs does not, our general waste bin is larger than theirs - but magically both made their way up their driveway and they 'didnt notice' hmmm
