Gas and Electricity Usage

Emma137 said:We have a gas hob & electric ovenSo just the hob contributing to the gas usage, would you say you use it a lot each day?Are you cooking for long periods during the day, boiling a kettle on the hob or other lengthy things? It seems unlikely you could use that much extra gas just on the hob though so a review of your hot water settings might be in order as well as checking the hot water tank, is it well insulated for example or is it just exposed copper?

The OP has a 5 year old combi boiler, no hot water tank.
I'm now thinking loft conversion: inadequate roof insulation and wall insulation?
Oversized combi, not running in condensing mode often enough?
Is this 4 b/r plus the loft conversion, or including it?
Is the house at altitude, exposed position, northern aspect, Northern region or Scotland?
No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Was the gas fire used in the period 3rd July - 2nd August that you provided figures for?

RelievedSheff said:You say you had the boiler replaced. Was this with a condensing boiler? If so are you running it so that it drops into condensing mode? To reach condensing mode modern boilers need to be set to a temperature so that the return water flow is at around 55 degrees C. In our case this means setting the boiler to around 65 degrees C any higher and the return water is too hot and the boiler never runs in condensing mode so is not running efficiently.
I just noticed that the OP has had the kitchen u/f heating on until just now-in an August heatwave?!No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Can the OP please confirm that the readings are actual whole cu'ft, cu'm or when you come to leccy whole kwh. I have a suspicion that the meters aren't being read correctly
The meter will have M3 or ft3 depending on whether it's imperial or metric - have a shufti at this if your meter is mechanical to see how to read and convert from ft3 or m3 to kwh
https://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/gas-meter.htm#:~:text=Generally%2C%20the%20older%2Dtype%20imperial,measure%20usage%20in%20cubic%20meters.&text=Although%20your%20meter%20measures%20usage,re%20actually%20billed%20in%20kWh.
Some electronic meters (those with electronic displays, rather than mechanical), especially Secure Digital (as used by a lot of companies) can be confusing to read and if you are missing the decimal point then you can be reading the meter incorrectly - the supplier wont know this and will keep making estimates based on your previous readings.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
What was the result of the switch off test?Sounds like you could have a rogue meter. Please provide a photo of it.0
