Location of the phase 3 solar farm announced. 1.2km SW of Pyworthy in Devon.

Looked on Maps and can see lots of panels already in that area.

And just when we'd got over the news that the next project is solar we now get the shock that it's a solar water park. Bizarre!!!

It does though for me feel ever so slighlty experimental.  Have all the issues been thought out?  Could there be delays greater than what is happening at Kirk Hill?  I think I will buy in to this but may be not to the amount I previously had in mind.

Maybe read further than the headline 😛
There wasn't anymore than the headline when I wrote this. However now I've seen the offer document I'm less impressed. The returns are nothing like as good as for Kirk Hill even with them tweaking (increasing!) the expected wholesale price.  If these numbers are overly conservative than in reality this may be ok but a 16 yr payback period is not looking very appetising.  The only thing that will keep me in is the fact that it's support the RE infrastructure.
Is the longer payback period reflective of the fact it's a 40 year project, so you will be getting a post-payback revenue stream for 24 years, compared to a total 25 year lifespan of wind assets (not sure what the payback period is for previous wind projects)?

Yes.  Slightly shorter. Kirk Hill was estimated to be 13 years payback period. (still not great and with less optimistic energy prices)

It may have already been covered or is in the FAQ but I cant find it.

EWhat happens (if anything) if you buy more shares than your annual usage (or your annual usage drops significantly after you buy the shares) as there doesn't seem to be any check to see if the number you have entered it correct? It says you can buy up to 10% more but thats still 10% on top of a 'made up' number?

This was covered in the Kirk Hill Web presentation and will be covered again tomorrow I expect.  *You can buy 120% of your consumption (import).  Ripple do not see themselves as policing your claim but there's a small chance hmrc may be interested.  If your consumption drops in time there is no requirement or mechanism to reduce your share.
There are dozens of similar posts to yours on the Ripple forum.

Re payback period.  There's no similar scheme to compare.   Do you want to help build RE or are you just investing?   Our primary focus is on the former but we hope to cover our costs at least.  We're not confident investors but this scheme attracted us.  The cost up front is a sum we could lose without the house caving in.  I can bore friends and family for years to come with fluctuations in performance.  Can't wait ☺

If a proper investment appraisal were conducted on these numbers (i.e. taking into account the time value of money using discounting techniques) then a project with a 16 year payback period comes out at a huge losss. Now I'm all for paying some to do the right thing and already have some greeen 'investments' which I never expected to get a return on and as it turns out some of which definitley will not.   So yes I do want to help build the RE infrastructure and I made this clear in my post above. However there is only so far I am prepared to go on a scheme which is not financially viable such as this.  So yes I'm putting into it but nothing like as much as I would have done.  This is money I could spend on other FF reduction (e.g  more home insulation) I don't have limiteless pot sadly.

I think I will give it a miss, when we original reserved we automatically assumed it would be a wind farm, I am 67 this year, by the time it comes on line I will be at least 68 ?.

But think of all those accumulated energy cost savings by the time you're 108 and the project comes to an end.

I must admit I've taken the option to increase Kirk Hill and reduce our planned proj 3 investment.  This is mostly because we're both in our early 60s and I enjoy beer too much to last to 100.
We put solar on the roof without a clear payback but so far, so good.

I certainly won't be investing the full amount equivalent to our import, but we'll probably still put a bit in, mulling over 25% to 50% using a refund of our excessive credit balance with Octopus, since that money was already allocated to energy, but we didn't use it.

Like many others, I'd been hoping for a wind scheme. We're already on track to be net exporters of electricity over the year, so while I'm keen on supporting RE development, and I (hopefully) have enough years left that I'll see most or all of the benefits, I kinda want something that will generate at the same time I'm importing.

I agree. I also wonder if a large percentage of those who paid the deposit could be older investors like us, say 50+, who would prefer a 25 year scheme that we are more likely to get the personal benefit from rather than leaving it in our wills.
