Paying sibling half of what parents gifted, plus interest

The parents made it quite clear in their Will that that £17k was an "advance" so to say - otherwise they wouldnt have deducted £17k back again from what she is down to get come the time.
So they thought it through to that extent - trying to be fair. It's unfortunate they don't seem to have taken inflation into account and phrased it as a percentage of house value or something (rather than as a fixed lump sum of money) or, alternatively, they could have put some sort of phrase about "adjusted in line with Retail Price Index" and then it would have been very clear that it was to be an inflation-adjusted amount, rather than a "£17k ...full stop...inflation not mentioned" amount (which, in hindsight, would have been much the better thing for them to do - rather than make assumptions that there wouldn't be any inflation at all - or, alternatively "Of course they'll automatically factor in inflation into this").
I've definitely never forgotten a phrase someone said once of "Assumption makes an !!!!!! of you and I" - as what we might regard as an automatic assumption isn't necessarily so to someone else (and certainly likely to be so if it suits them personally to "assume" otherwise).
In a very very different context - just how many people have got married/lived together on the automatic assumption that "Of course we will be faithful to each other" and then found out they were the only person in the couple that had made that assumption and their Other Half hadn't been singing from the same songsheet? Precisely.....

Unfortunately the !!!!! makes the point less obvious but look at the spelling and fill in the gap.0
