My son wants better broadband cos he’s lagging in his game.
Virgin 100 went up to £41 a month but Virgin says as I’m a loyal customer can have it for £28. I know they like to put it up a few times though.
My son says he wants Talk Talk or BT. I can’t get the full fibre. I always thought Virgin was the best for gaming.
thanks

Ask your son how he plans to pay for the upgrade costs

No full fibre then much lower speed than VM .

If we got BT it would be fibre 1 or 2 as the full one has not come here0
-
But that is a maximum 80 meg and depends upon distance and quality of cable from local cabinet .That goes for any Openreach supplier .Logic of moving from VM 100 or more to BT or TT 80 or less does not make sense .0

Just remember that lagging in online gaming will be purely down to latency and not the speed of the broadband, so you need to get a connection with the lowest latency and not look at the speed.rainbow93 said:My son wants better broadband cos he’s lagging in his game.Virgin 100 went up to £41 a month but Virgin says as I’m a loyal customer can have it for £28. What device is he gaming on? A good first step would be to make sure he is connected to the router with a direct Ethernet cable, if he any other kind of connection such as Wi-Fi or powerline adaptors this will increase the latency.0 -
He’s got a pc but uses an Ethernet cable.0

Quite often with ‘gamers’, it’s not the download speed that’s critical but the ‘lag’ , between pressing the button on your keyboard or game pad, and a reaction in the game, this ‘latency’, it seems is worse on VM, than OR FTTC, if there is FTTP then speeds equal or better than VM and better latency can be obtained than VM0

What is OR FTTC and FTTP please? Which WiFi Provider would be better for gaming! Thank you0

So just to clarify the Ethernet cable goes straight to the router from the PC?rainbow93 said:He’s got a pc but uses an Ethernet cable.
Also again to clarify by "WiFi Provider" i assume you mean "Broadband Provider" because if he has an Ethernet connection then the Wi-Fi is irrelavent.rainbow93 said:What is OR FTTC and FTTP please? Which WiFi Provider would be better for gaming! Thank you0 -
That would only depend on the internet connection when using a Cloud Gaming Provider such as Google Stadia. In the OP's case if her son is using a gaming PC then it's unlikely he is using that kind of service and running the games directly on his PC so the lag he is most likely talking about is when playing online with other players and the connection between them and how quickly their position/actions update on his computer from when they move etc.iniltous said:Quite often with ‘gamers’, it’s not the download speed that’s critical but the ‘lag’ , between pressing the button on your keyboard or game pad, and a reaction in the game, this ‘latency’, it seems is worse on VM, than OR FTTC, if there is FTTP then speeds equal or better than VM and better latency can be obtained than VM0
