Neil_Jones said:Never rely on cloud storage; always keep your own (local) backups.Recent post in here claims that Dropbox deleted all a user's data from their computer. They (the poster) never came back and elaborated, but the point was why you shouldn't totally depend on cloud storage, though I think it was user error in that particular case.
It all depends on how important your backups are to you.0 -
You shouldn't rely on one backup method.
I store small amounts of stuff/work-related on cloud services, and large amounts/work-related on a backup ssd.
I'm tempted to upgrade my cloud storage (need about half a Tb or more and I'm trying to decide between
pcloud (Swiss ) £96 per year 2TB (currently around £76) or £350 for lifetime.
gdrive (US) £80 per year 2TB
Dropbox (US) £96 per year 2TB.
These are some of the more user-friendly ones.
You'll find plenty of others I'm sure.

I currently have
100 GB with Google Drive (£15.99 a year)
1 TB with OneDrive ("free" with Office365)
2 x 4TB local NAS with drives mirrored. Thinking of upgrading to a 4 bay model.
I previously used DropBox but their pricing model is too expensive.0 -
Hi mrsyardbroom, I am going to put in a vote for pCloud. I have been using it now for about 4-5 years and, barring a couple of self inflicted issues, it has worked flawlessly .. it has some features that put it ahead of similar offerings. You can get 10Gb free or they offer lifetime subscriptions at reasonable rates. As a backup for my 'most important' data I use a free Sync account,
The company I work for uses OneDrive and it has been a nightmare. I am getting at least 1-2 failures per month requiring me to lose work or attempt to recover documents. I no longer trust it so I retain multiple local backups.

I'm with pCloud's free service but probably going to get a paid version.
One point I'd mention is that America's one of those countries that their government can access your stored files if they're on US soil. pCloud has servers in the US and the EU and you need to specify on signing up that you want the EU servers as they apparently have better data protection. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
depends how much you need - for smaller amounts, Google Drive is good value - £15.99 p/a or £1.59 p/m for 100GB1

If you are just looking for a cloud backup solution rather than immediate file access, have a look at a service like https://www.backblaze.com/cloud-backup-d.html It offers unlimited storage and file versioning, but to recover files you have to navigate through your backup, select the files to retrieve and they will then send you a link to a zip file for download. I have over 6TB backed up from my server. It costs $99 per year, but you can often find introductory discount codes.

Got an offer for this but I don't know if it is any good/secure. A one time fee sounds good to me though.

This is just far too good to be true. You would expect a company that has ongoing cost to save your files in perpetuity for a one off fee? I want their electricity supplier number, plus the ongoing £50 quid per square foot storage, the equipment maintenance cost, plus a person to at least give it a daily once over. Even if this is done in a third world country it still costs. Add a backup solution and you can nearly double the cost again.
The other issue with cloud backups, when your storage device dies and you need to do a full restore, from the cloud, and depending on size, it could take days if not longer. We a few years ago transferred some files to a company that was cloud based, but would import our data onto their system. It took close to 5.5 months 24/7 over a 1gb corporate black fibre link.

To be fair they are offering a limited one time low fee package. No different to other startups offering large free space at the beginning.
My concern is that the site looks very amateurish and far too sales orientated, like a pushy car salesman. Also all the reviews, on various little known review sites all seem to be written the same.....
At $16 for unlimited for life, it may be worth a punt as an early adopter, but, wouldn't rely on it until proven.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you
