Hair salon‘s adding 20% to customers bills plus £4 for PPE use

My hairdresser added 20% to my bill when I went to pay , I did not know about it before this .
When I queried it the answer was because they couldn’t run at full capacity ( no more than 4 clients At the same time )   Apparently this had been emailed to me when my on line booking was confirmed
I did not see it and have gone back and read through the email which on close inspection does mention the additional cost, I don’t usually read through a confirmation I just check the date and time is right, I think the salon should of made sure I was aware of it before they started my treatment, I have informed them of what I think is an unfair system and not good customer service at all.

The actual increase in charge is fair and reasonable as they have increased costs of running but reduced capacity.  Those two things will inevitably put the prices up.
Most hairdressers I have informed them of what I think is an unfair system and not good customer service at all.
Its not unfair but it would have been good if you had been told.

Breach of CCRs. Traders need to tell you the total inclusive price before you are bound by the contract - this applies as much for on-premises contract as it does distance or off-premises. Normally a contract with a hairdresser would be on-premises at their salon or off-premises in your home - so unsure if this might be distance, depending on when the contract became binding.

  • I know my hairdresser has quoted me an extra £30 to what I paid last time I went there in feb.

They weren't cheap then & often thought about changing which I will do now.

Did you ask the cost of the treatment prior to booking an appointment?

I'm not sure why you think it's unfair. They did inform you through the email but you didn't read it. My hairdresser also charged me extra. I was more than happy to pay it, after all we want the haircuts. They have to buy the PPE and pass the charge back onto the customer, if they didn't then they would be out of pocket.

My hairdresser charged the same amount as she alway has, but then she works on her own with just one sink and two chairs - one for colouring - so her overheads haven't changed dramatically

Your hairdresser did inform you of the increase in costs  All you can do is vote with your feet or if you were a habitual tipper, stop tipping

Actually tbh, my hairdresser could have doubled her prices and I would have paid. Took me many a year to find her and I love how she does my hair

Maybe it could have been better communicated in the salon, but you were informed, and they have had to increase their cost base to cover the purchase and use of PPE -and by restricting customers they are taking less money, yet still have to pay the same rent, electric bills etc. Seems a fair premium to pay considering. The alternative option of course is that you buy a pair of scissors and get to work with the bathroom mirror - then you'd not have to worry about these higher prices next time.

My hairdresser too added about 20% to my bill & without telling me first.  I was just so darned glad to get it done I'd have paid double!  Getting an appt when they had only been open a week, on a day they weren't normally open, after the time they would normally close,  there is no way I am going to complain about a thing.  My hairdresser is the only thing I have missed about lockdown.

My mum is a hairdresser. She's mostly retired but still has a handful of clients. She told me weeks ago before hairdressers were allowed to open, that increased charges would apply due to the cost of PPE and having to clean down between each client, which restricts the amount you can do in a day.
I suspect that's not a great deal you can do. They did inform you albeit in a way that made it unlikely you'd read it. A mobile hairdresser if you can find one is likely to be cheaper as it's only the increased costs of PPE they've got to take into account.
