Hi guys, I just wanted to try and speak to someone regarding having debt due to gambling!!!!!! This isn't a massive amount in terms of what I've seen in other posts but it is a lot to me! I'll give a brief run down of how this all started I'm a recovering gambling addict from years ago but since I've been in lock down and in furlough for almost 14 weeks only been bound to the house I started using online gambling apps!!!!!! they are advertised everywhere!!!!!! I've spent my months wages already and got myself £500 maxed out on my overdraft and owe a family member £200 I feel so sad for having slipped into these old habits it's the panicking phase that does this we worry we aren't animals that don't care the problem I now have besides needing to tackle the gambling issue again!!! is how do I get through to the end of the month? and clear my overdraft without causing complications or letting family know I've failed yet again!!! I feel really sad in myself for having done this the main reason is for doing so well after my younger years of gambling!!! sorry to have ranted on and I'm assuming this post is in the right section just looking for advice from anyone that might have been in similar situations I will contact the bank to see if there is any helo they can offer a silly old fool!!!!!! thanks for listening guys.

Nothing wrong with gambling in moderation, exactly the same as most things that are bad for you, although gambling adverts should be banned.0

The bank wouldn't allow me to extend past the £500 mark but has since now allowed me too raise the overdraft to $600 now sensibly this extra £100 will tie me over until payday the next step is to cancel all gambling accounts! contact the bank in order to stop these transactions in the future to gambling companies this is and also add myself to the gambling online list now I just need to work out how to pay back the overdraft within 90 days!0

It sounds like you've caught the problem quickly this time around so hopefully you can recover from this.Post an SOA (regular income, expenditure) on here and people might be able to help you work out where you can cut down/save money to get back on track. What's the arrangement you have with your family member. Do they know about your gambling history? Will they be sympathetic to small repayments so that you can focus on repaying the bank?Good luck, you can sort this.Start Debt Jun 2020 = £10,036 - Current £5,894 | #324 £1,000 Emergency Fund Member - £2050

Please don't feel ashamed or embarrassed. Also please don't be tempted to post an SOA. I don't know why people insist on suggesting that on here. I'm sure it's just so that people can be nosy about others' finances. You know your problem, it's gambling and you know what your income and expenditure are. Gambling's an illness and I'm not sure if you are aware but there are NHS clinics springing up to help people deal with it as it's now recognised as an addictive illness. Research is being done as we speak. You can actually self refer to the Gambling Clinic. And there's some helpful info here : https://www.cnwl.nhs.uk/services/mental-health-services/addictions-and-substance-misuse/national-problem-gambling-clinic Good luck! I know it's not easy to shake addiction. Please note - taken from the Forum Rules and amended for my own personal use (with thanks) : It is up to you to investigate, check, double-check and check yet again before you make any decisions or take any action based on any information you glean from any of my posts. Although I do carry out careful research before posting and never intend to mislead or supply out-of-date or incorrect information, please do not rely 100% on what you are reading. Verify everything in order to protect yourself as you are responsible for any action you consequently take.1

Well done on noticing you have a problem at this early stage yes the next week weeks until the 31st will be a struggle but use that to ensure you do not go back to old ways.6 -
the absolute first thing you should do is go to gamstop.co.uk and exclude yourself to prevent you from gambling (or at least make it a lot more difficult to do so).
Gamblers tend to chase losses and the temptation to do this is very strong. You need to do this. Even if you get "up" you know it won't be long until you lose even more. It is a slipperly slope!5 -
Gambling addict here as well; don't be embarrassed. If you haven't done so already then Gamstop: the instant you read this. Scrap all bonuses, loyalty points etc. If possible self exclude from physical bookies too.
Those measures will turn the tap off.
I know for definite that gambling in society is completely misunderstood; people naively think it's as simple as 'don't gamble then'. Deregulation & blanket advertising has been a pervasive disaster: hundreds of thousands if not millions in lockdown will have spent ££ they didn't have or couldn't afford. Bookmaking firms are parasites in a way drinks companies aren't, simply because they want you to lose money but dress it up as 'entertainment'. "Keep it fun (but keep depositing our CEO needs a new yacht)". If pubs treated customers the same way with alcohol most would be closed.
Have a mental image of some owners of a firm in malta or gibraltar lightening a cigar with £20 notes of your wages; it's a painful image but you need 'reconditioned' to not want to gamble again.
Your focus is on the money you've lost but, of concern, you haven't listed your steps to leave gambling behind.
Buy the book 'overcoming problem gambling' it has a casino wheel on the front: it's excellent.
Post an SOA if you want to (it's all anonymous anyway); it will help the forum advise you, but unless you've other debts you're not going homeless or trashing your credit-worthiness between now and payday.
Count yourself lucky that credit card deposit ban came in when it did or there'd be millions in the UK with much higher 'lockdown gambling debt'.
👍😊

£1,200 a month take home
£1,000 (Furlough)
I pay 3 bills
1) car repayment of £280
2) car insurance of £70
3) sky £20
Majority of the rest of my wage is food shopping and other little bits through out the month so I'm quite lucky as I say not to have to pay towards anything else this is as of late.
I should live like a KING!!!!!! you know I feel for those with gambling addictions I suspect majority are like me a normal nice easy going guy it makes you feel sick having this problem.
And the feeling of not being able to talk to family regarding this as they will fly of the handle potentially even call it a day on the marriage.
The steps are contact the bank to stop any payments in the future to any gambling service add myself to the list as you say on that website and find something to take my mind off it was great whilst in work you had something to occupy your mind I was doing great then this furlough/ lock down comes along and boom you have all time in world to climb walls and start doing the stupidest thing ever gamble!!!!!! I'll beat this if it's the last thing I do!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for all the replies of help means a lot.........0
