No you're not wrong, you can't get round the CGT by doing something else with the money such as put it in an ISA.
What you could have done, as you acknowledge, is Sell the CGT limit and then put it in an ISA and leave it to grow there. Over 20 years I'd have thought that wa feasible. Sorry to rub salt into the wounds.
Anyway it's a nice problem to have.  Better than not having it. I've got similar with Apple and I'll just be spending down enough to use up the CGT limit each year from now on which for my Apple shares isn't much more than the CGT  limit as I've made about 10x on them. Had my initial Apple investment been in an ISA not an issue I'd have so same mistake here !

But now my heart sinks almost every time I look at my FT watchlist to see the rises in the SMT share price - are they growing faster than we can sell them?
This looks to me like a sign of bubble territory if true.

Way back in 1993, my partner & I bought £5000-worth of SMT shares in an unwrapped account and we left them unregarded until several years ago I realised that there'd be a substantial capital gains tax bill if we sold them.  So I mapped a schedule to dispose of tranches of the SMT shares over multiple years to keep within the annual CGT tax-free allowance; half of them have gone now.  Perversely, I welcomed any market-wide drops in share prices because it meant that I could unload a greater number of SMT shares in the next tranche!

But now my heart sinks almost every time I look at my FT watchlist to see the rises in the SMT share price - are they growing faster than we can sell them?  Certainly the day when we can finally divest ourselves of the last few shares of that nearly thirty-year-old investment seems to be getting further and further away...

Nice problem to have, I wish I had the same problem :-) Never had to worry about CGT myself :-(

SMT was on my short list for ITs, certainly going to watch it further, but I wonder whether a re balancing is due soon as it looks like a bubble

"Looks" like a bubble quite literally, when you see a growth chart.

SMT is looking very bubbly to me and I am certainly tempted to sell, with a view to getting back in when the next significant dip comes, which I expect within the next few months.

Is Tesla going to achieve it's S&P 500 listing?  Feel sorry for those that are going to be forced to buy in at current levels through managed funds.

Active/ managed investor that will always be a risk, I am hoping for at least 90% passive funds in my portfolio and only 10% being an active EM.

On the whole Passive investing beats active investors In the long game imo and I would agree with the monevator's view on this too

By managed I was referring to passives. Can see the price being inflated further.

If Tesla is added to the SP500 it will be one of the biggest additions on record.
Trackers will have to sell down other stocks to get the required ratios I think.
