Li Auto looks interesting. A Chinese electric vehicle company filing for US IPO, I believe they specialise in electric SUV cars.

Ha, I dumped most of mine at the right time after they'd gone from $4-5 to $14-15 in about six weeks - lucky timing!  I'll sit back and watch my 100 shares and depending which way the wind blows, be envious or relieved that you have 4x as much in them as I do

You will not be able to buy this stock pre IPO it as it is yet to be traded in the stock market.
It is a different process with Nikola, Hylllion, Fisker as these companies are going to the market through what is so called a reversed merger via SPAC (Special-purpose acquisition company). You could buy Nikola, Hylllion before they are going public by buying shares of these SPAC companies.
IMO it is not a good idea to jump too quickly,  in day one as this stock will be likely to be very volatile as a lot of day traders will take part to cash day profit.
But you if you could catch it while there are on the bottom, and hold for about a few weeks (even for months) it is very high probability you will make a huge gain.

I think every man and his dog is going to jump onto the EV band wagon.
Very difficult to pick EV winners going forward.
Amazon is buying up EV related companies and buying 100,000 Vans from Rivian, one to watch imho when/if they go public.
Li Auto have good management and actually have a product to sell, even though it's a Hybrid setup, although they have a 100% electric on the drawing board.
It's a huge market and room for many players, even the current ICE manufacturers like GM, Ford etc,.

But it's Chinese, built by innocent protesters in labour camps by people who are tortured and worse.
My portfolio does excellently without having to resort to this type of company. I'm all for EV as being a sector to add to my portfolio----and I am currently researching several possibilities----but none of them will be Chinese.
OK---time now for Chinese admiration society to tell me how silly I am-----just as I was when I boycotted S African goods during apartheid. Enjoy.

Do you 'screen' out non-chinese companies not to invest in that also manufacture products in China (because surely this would invalidate huge swathes of companies) or is it just Chinese companies?

Seems to be a lot of interest in EVs.  I think some people have overlooked the fact that the people who manufacture most cars now are also developing EVs.  Unlikely Toyota and VW will decide to call it a day just because they can't use an internal combustion engine.

I saw a great video snip the other day. From a few years back.
There's a "famous" investment manager (who's an idiot but that another story)
Anyway, the IM gave one of the investors in his fund a 20 page detailed report of why Tesla was going to fail and why he's shorted them.
And the investor asked him "have you ever driven a Tesla?" and the answer was "no"
And the guy withdrew all his money from the fund and bought Tesla shares.
And subsequently the fund has crashed in size (as people took their money out and due to its dismal performance)

Just like the De Loreain story: except it had a slightly different ending. (Although the Tesla story is far from over, and will not end until it qualifies for membership of the S and P 500).
