I am of a different mindset from some here. It wouldn't matter how big a discount I was offered (unless we are talking silly money), your first buy should be a house YOU want not one someone else is trying to flogAn answer isn't spam just because you don't like it......8

We have:
Had the slate roof repaired
Replaced the front door
Redecorated all rooms but 1 in the house
Had some wiring and plumbing replaced
Had a new boiler installed
Had two new windows installed
Had the flat roof replaced
Replaced the bathroom suite
this is all the responsbility of the landlord. you should not have to pay for this. no wonder they dont want you to move out.
i would love tenants like this in my property.
move out and let your inlaws live in the real world with real tenants. are they even paying tax on your rent. this may be another reason they dont want you to move out.hahahahahaha

Can you make the situation clear to the sellers? If they know your in laws are just doing it to spite you they will realise how petty they are and that the hassle of dealing with them is not worth the extra few ££1

Now you say you've actually done quite a bit of work on it then it does look as if you were feeding their expectations or they just want to carry on taking advantage. What does OH think, they're his parents?
Either way, still attempt a clear the air chat, assuming OH is of like mind, then press on with your lives but obviously don't share any more plans until they are a done deal.
I understand the suggestion to explain to the agents but be wary of what alternative story the parents will spin.2 -
Personally I wouldnt buy the inlaws house. They might still see it as "theirs"
Suggest to them if they want to sell they could get a better price on the open market.
BTW did they do all the legally required stuff with you, if they didnt they might not be able to evict you. Have a look at the stickies at the top.
If they didnt comply, I would keep quiet so if things did turn nasty with them you have an ace up your sleeve.

Controlling Outlaws; who'd have thought it, eh?You don't say how close your rented house is to SO's parents or how far the new property would be, but it seems as if a Cunning Plan may have gone somewhat awry here.My BiL lives literally next door to his parents and always has been located within 25m. I'm not aware of the monetary arrangements, but it's probably been quite a favourable scenario for him. Lots of nice roast dinners too! We, on the other hand, ploughed our own furrow, albeit with some interference along the way, so we're well out of easy reach.Now, as the Outlaws become aged and infirm, we're arriving at pay-back time.......OP you probably have plenty of time ahead of you and there are certainly thousands more houses out there, so no need to rush, but whatever you decide, don't let the SO's parents have any connection at all with the property you eventually buy.3

just tell them you changed your mind, pick another property on the market and tell them you are buying that one. In the end it'll be just empty words, they won't buy a random house just to annoy you. plus then you can go after another anyway. What are they really going to do? Buy everything, everywhere?1

Saying they are going to buy it and actually buying it are quite different. Do they have the cash? What would they do with it once they have bought it? It would be a daft financial decision. And why would the sellers sell to them? If it is SSTC the buyers will probably not even let them in, even with the possibility of a higher offer. The more they declare their position the less likely that will happen. They won't even get past the agent.
Ranting because they are mad is one thing but carrying it through is another. It won't happen, them may be able to control you but not the buyer0 -
Maybe renting ‘at a very reasonable rate’ means the in laws have been subsiding OP and partner and despite the new boiler etc have taken a financial hit? Now they think they have been metaphorically slapped in the face?Definitely a case for tea, cake and an honest conversation.0
