Thanks for the advice people. We have done several things on the house which was costly but we certainly have not been in any position to do a full top to bottom refurb. This would costs tens of thousands!
    We have:
    Had the slate roof repaired
    Replaced the front door
Redecorated all rooms but 1 in the house
Had some wiring and plumbing replaced
    Had a new boiler installed
    Had two new windows installed
    Had the flat roof replaced
    Replaced the bathroom suite

Can you elaborate on what sort of price they are offering you that house for?
Nope they havn't said. But I am not interested.

If you're not interested. Why spend so much of your own money on the property?

You are renting, it might be cheaper than the usual prices in your area but there’s no need to spend money on all of the above, that’s up to the landlords.

No wonder they want you to stay, you are fixing their house for them and paying them rent!

The in laws are far too controlling. It's none of their business if you decide to buy and it's certainly none of their business how much you offer on a house.  I don't think you should consider buying their rental property at any price. Buy a house you want in a location you want.

Unless they have always had an arrangement with their son that they would rent him and then sell him this house cheaply, and now want to know why he is throwing so much money away and leaving them with a house they only bought for him in the first place, just because his wife doesn't like it.  That's the only explanation I can come up with for otherwise inexplicable behaviour on their part.

Possibly but you would have hoped the OP would have mentioned as such rather than giving only half the story

Sadly another thread where money and family shouldn't mix

It does seem a bit odd, but you appear to be looking the gift house in the mouth so to speak.

If they're offering you a genuine discount below market value for the house in its current condition then you should really weigh it up before rejecting the possibility. In any case, it would maybe be better to find out what their actual issue is and see if you can reach a sensible resolution without the animosity.

I'm wondering if the new house is further away from the Outlaws and that's what they're objecting to.
