Caught speeding
hi, I was clocked oncoming by a mobile speed van on my way home from work this morning. I was travelling at 38 in a 30. My speedo is set higher so really I was travelling at 35. Will I be offered the course and fine? Its abit contradictory online on about banding?! This is my first offence. Thanks

It's possible you will get away with it - just depends on the speed they recorded. At that speed you should get the option of a course. Just have to see what the postman brings.1

The "bands" are clear: 34 or below, no action35 and above, action. You should be offered a course up to 42, provided the offence was in England or Wales.0

You need to wait for fourteen days to see if you (assuming you are the Registered Keeper) receive a "Notice of Intended Prosecution" and a request to provide the driver's details.0

You don't have a course and a fine. It's one of the other. You get points to go along with the fine too. Taking the course means no points and no fine, although the course costs about the same as the fine.0

Have you read your insurance policy terms and what they say about speeding, points and speed awareness courses? (We can't see them from here - there's no "one size fits all" answer to this).0

So in a 30, nothing will happen below 35.
From 35 to 42, you may be offered a half day of tea and biscuits. Probably about £90, no points, no need to tell insurance unless they explicitly ask (only Admiral brands have ever been known to ask, and they can't find out any other way).
If not, then from 35 to 49, you will almost certainly be offered a fixed penalty - £100, 3pts - unless you're looking at a totting ban.
50 and above, or facing a totter, you're out of fixed penalty territory. That will probably be an "SJPN" - Single Justice Penalty Notice - basically, mail-order-magistrate. You can send in your excuses and grovels by post if you wish. https://www.gov.uk/single-justice-procedure-notices
It's when the magistrates get involved that the fine bands come into play, based on a %age of your weekly income.1
