I'm fascinated reading this thread.  I'm just clearing my parents' house and my sister and I were wondering if leaving stuff outside (there's a large drive area) with a sign saying 'please help yourself' was appropriate.  There are many things that fall between the charity shop / sell / keep / car boot categories and yet too good to just throw.  Like lots of quality bits of timber stacked in the  garage and pieces of solid 'brown' furniture in the house.  Ironically, there are some pieces of nice teak he took out of a skip himself about 40 years ago.

I feel encouraged to give it a go.  I love the idea of someone being able to use something that we can't.  But I'm also a smidge concerned about the message it also gives out - I've gone to great lengths to not make the house look like it's unoccupied and being cleared.
  • We have a village FB page specifically for freebies.  Perhaps your area has the same?  Items go in a flash.  Pallets are super popular 😊  I have found Sunday to be the best day If you’re leaving stuff outside. People go for a stroll etc.  Often items are on the village green for maximum exposure!  If there is a central point nearby you, nobody knows which house it belongs to.

Many thanks for the suggestions @goldfinches and @VeganLois.  Using 'decluttering' sounds like a good idea.  There is a facebook page for 'buy nothing' for the village, but one of the rules is that you must live in the borough and be able to prove it (not sure how, didn't go any further - and you can only join one group, so that would stop me doing the same local to me) - which I personally don't - and I only visit periodically, depending on the latest lockdown/bubble arrangements, as my husband is rather poorly, so I need to be more careful than most.  The facebook page for the village seems to have a really unpleasant tone at the moment, so I won't bother with that just now.

But I'll be there to stay for a few days shortly, so I'll look more carefully at local options nearer the time and maybe print and laminate some notices in advance.  Thanks for the ideas.
  • Haven't had the greatest day so reading all the encouragement to recycle/re-home goods is heartwarming.  I echo all sentiments because I know of people that know of people in dire straights so will often collect needed goods when spotted.
