planning on adding up what's in the piggy bank. This is the pig that we were given as a wedding present too many decades back and ever since we've put change from our pockets in it when we come home. Things have changed over the last few years so there's less change and a little saucer with £1 coins needed for specific things (art class and buying eggs from a neighbour). But the pig should yield enough for some small birthday (mine!) or Christmas treat in the next couple of weeks. Given the lack of banks now I get a rough count and then bag it and take it to the shops with me and feed it into their cash self service tills. Takes forever but at least I don't lose 8% or whatever to the coin counter machines.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe and Old Style Money Saving boards. This reminded me too that for the first time in decades I haven't counted my pig!! Used to be I would count up everything and see what I had to buy Christmas presents. And then I decided when I didn't have a lot of presents to buy that given my birthday is in December I could use it to buy a treat. It's trickier now given the lack of coins one gets - the pig has normally received whatever is in my or his pocket when we got home - but now it's almost all plastic. Last year I counted it up - wasn't a lot, under £30 - and had the second problem of no banks available to deposit it and the post office won't take random piles of coins to deposit either. So I ended up using it to buy the shopping at Tesco one week - took about 30 minutes to get it all into the "cash" till at the self serve section.
So I suspect I will spend a bit of time tomorrow counting up my ill gotten gains and bagging them up to take over to Tesco again.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe and Old Style Money Saving boards. Not a proper womble but I did clear out the piggy bank. Normally this happens in December, originally to ensure I had enough to buy presents for whomever. But now so much is on plastic so rather than the £150 I might get years back this year's haul was just short of £12. Still - handy to have.
But the womble bit is that in addition to what is spendable there's also 7 euro pennies, 1 US penny and 5 Canadian pennies. The euro bits I might use or leave behind next holiday (probably annoying but if I leave a tip anywhere I tend to include any shrapnel I have). The US penny frankly isn't worth much and pennies are no longer used in Canada at all so those may go in to a charity bag for a collector or whatever.
(fyi - Canada decided 15? years back that pennies weren't worth the bother so while prices may still include them they aren't used. So if you buy something & it comes to $1.02 you pay $1 and if it comes to $1.03 you pay $1.05 unless you're paying by plastic which most people do.)I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe and Old Style Money Saving boards. It seems my ``cycling radar" is on form again. Yesterday I cycled about 45 miles (to the coast and back) and in the last 4 miles or so I stopped 7 times to pick up a grand total of £1.23 including a round pound.
Then I went cycling again this afternoon and stopped to pick up 2 Deutsche Marks, 65 Euro cents, 50 Polish Croszy, a thruppeny bit and 2p which were all lying next to the kerb within about 10yds of each other.6 -

Needless to say my coin collection is unexpectedly coming along nicely.1
