Can I pay a cheque in my wife's name into our joint Halifax account?

OK - just an update here for anyone who was interested. I dropped off to Halifax this morning, was first in the queue. The lady opened the door and asked what I wanted to do. I told her that I wanted to pay two cheques in, and she directed me straight to the automated machine! Doh!! I told her they were large value cheques, but she said that was fine - so I put my card into the machine and chose the 'deposit cheques' option. I put the cheques in the machine and it read each one, each time displaying the amount on the screen and asking for confirmation that it was correct. At the end of the process, it showed me the total, and printed a receipt which had an image of each cheque on it. So all in all, the process was very straightforward, and there was nothing for me to be worried about. So... apologies for the dumb post    since doing online banking for the last ten years I very rarely go into branches anymore, and was expecting it to be a bit more difficult that it was!

The answer to the question was always 'yes'. 

You can pay into a joint account a cheque made payable to just one of the parties. What you cannot do is pay a cheque made out in joint names into an account held in a single name
