I'm very cynical about this whole thing, I assume Kath must be an expat American, I don't know anyone in the UK who calls their mum or mam, mom.

If she is in this predicament you could go the way of the very good advice given or couldn't ( or should that be cannot) you be a bit more creative...

My brother lives on the other side of the rails and had quite a good scheme going at one time. He would run up debts with companies like Greenwoods, provident etc. get all kinds of goods from catalogues, mobile phones all sorts. When you live on council estates as he was, is, you get knocks on the door for things like duvee covers, they are total tat and might cost £50 but you only have to pay at £1 a week, then when you have paid a few times they ask if you want to borrow more money, companies aren't allowed to tout for lending knocking on doors this is how they get around it.

He'd run up thousands and then do a bunk, I've had knocks on my door where he has given my name, they ask where he lives now. I never knew where he lived from one year to the next.

What I'm saying is can't (cannot) Kath do a bunk, I'm not saying she should but if she did would she get away with it like my brother has for years?

It was slightly Ironic with my brother when he moved close to me he had a debt collecting firm on him for someone elses debts with exactly his name and very close dob.

On a more level headed front shouldn't she write to the creditors and get them to freeze the interest or make them take her to the CC. I'm not sure if you have to pay interest on CC judgements these days. Going bankrupt seems a bit extreme.

    Hmmmm!

Actually he hasn't done anything criminal, he never fraudulently obtained anything, he's just not got round to paying for it and if it's still the case the people he owes money have only 6 years to find him then the debt has to be written off.

I mentioned in the post companies like Greenwoods, Provident who lend money to people with poor credit ratings. The actual interest is 40%. They would lend someone £100 and the debt would be instantly £140 and that would be payed off at normally £10 a week after say 4 payments they would ask the person if they wanted to borrow more, right, you still owe £100 they'll lend you £200, £100 to pay off what you owe and give you £100 in your hand but you now owe them £280. The 40% doesn't sound that bad considering who they are lending to but it's not 40% apr far from it and they are paying interest on interest. These companies doing this are plc's and hightly reputable they aren't back street loan sharks.

You've got the gall to call my brother a criminal scum bag. I know one thing for sure you would not call him that to his face.

Thanks Malestrom, I think it may be too late for that - the OP hasn't been back for days now.

Kath20 - I'm sorry your thread hasn't really been focused on helping you. Feel free to PM me if you want to.

    Hope you're OK

I have been misunderstood. I meant to say that I will have to talk to people who earn less than me but somehow cope. Not that I am superior. I am not that stupid. I am ashamed that I am in this situation.
    Best wishes and thank you

    Hi Kath,
Glad you decided to post after all - thought your webpage was a good idea anyhoo! (sorry you couldnt post a link but its gotta be neutral on here - thats what makes it so easy to get reliable advice on MSE)
    - just to echo what i think someone else has also said - dont be too proud to claim benefits - after all thats what we've payed tax for all these years - I'll be damned if I'm not going to claim some when my backs up against the wall (and I have when things have gone awry) - call it compulsory insurance.

I understand that it must be incredibly frustrating and heart breaking to find yourself in this situation, especially as you are obviously a dedicated and hardworking kinda person - life kicks us all the backside sometimes but dont let it finish you, - as someone else suggested your gonna have to treat it like a project - look at all possible solutions and then produce a strategy.

If you can post a more detailed budget it will give people a better idea of whether it would be possible or the best solution for you to declare bankcrupty (sorry about the appaling spelling - brain is sludge today!) or if not, what the best strategy is for repayments - re-organising loan, negotiating with debtors.

Finally, you might have to take a step back and revise your understanding of the debt line and CAB facilities etc - they may earn less than you but that doesnt mean they dont have reams more experience and knowledge of the practicalities of debt repayment. The real golden nugget is the fact that they are totally non-judgemental, and non-profit making, making them infinately more valuable than the most highly payed financial advisor in my opinion!

    good luck!

Thank you. I know my mother is entitled to benefit but I have not claimed. Yes, I am stupid. I have an interview for a job on Tuesday and then I will make decissions.
I will come back to go through everything.
    Best and thank you
    Kath

The others have got there before me. If you are entitled to some help then for GAWD's SAKE CLAIM IT!!!

I would also check out what benefits your mum is entitled to as well.

This might make all the difference in the world to you and your family.
