I doubt the police have enough vehicle examiners to be extra vigilant at the moment.
They don't need to. DVSA have their own patrol vehicles and the legal power to pull you over for a vehicle inspection as well as issue fines and prohibition notices. DVSA checkpoints have continued to operate during the crisis and all they need is one police car to pull vehicles in and there's a team of DVSA vehicle inspectors ready and waiting to check peoples cars.

They haven't. That's why they need the police car.

DVSA have the power to stop commercial vehicles so no need for the police.
But the discussion wasn't about commercials.
It wasn't about the DVSA either but things evolve.

My car is only 4 years old and well maintained, the question was more about the time needed to arrange an MOT if it does not get automatically extended and whether what i had read about the extension still applied.

    I will wait and see

Yes, your question has been ignored. The answer is that the due date should be extended automatically, but it won't show on the online system until 2-3 days beforehand.

It was hardly ignored - the first few replies addressed it head-on, before the topic wandered.

The "time needed to arrange" is one phone call. Most garages will be open again now. The extension was purely to cover them not being open.

Might want to update your knowledge. VOSA/DVSA were given powers to stop vehicles under the Road Vehicles (Powers to Stop) Regulations 2011 which came into effect on 30th March 2011. They were able to do it prior to that but each VOSA officer had to be accredited individually by the Chief Constable.

Ok, just checked the vehicle check website and my MOT has been extended from 29th June to December 29th.

Not just that, some people will still be uneasy about letting someone touch their car as they'll need to disinfect the entire thing or quarantine it.

You're optimistic if you think  the government gives two hoots about that.  They are in a hurry to 'get back to normal' and the reason why extensions are showing only 7 days out is to allow for a rescinding of the extension.  Nobody will force you to book to go to a pub on July 4th but if they decide that that is the date from which extensions cease, then there will be no grace period.  They won't care whether you felt at risk.

If somebody's that worried, they aren't working. So they can park it in the sun for a couple of days, which'll kill any virus on the surfaces that the garage touched - but most garages will sanitise any contact surfaces anyway.

And how do they know somebody didn't try the door handle while the car was parked, anyway?

If you ordered anything online or bought anything other than basic food during the height of the pandemic you didn't give two hoots about it either however the difference is you didn't give two hoots about the poor people having to go drive vans and lorries delivering the stuff you could have lived without.
So what did you order or buy during lockdown that you would have died without having so people like me were out not just working normal hours but exceeding what was the normal legal limits as the EU drivers hours were relaxed so we could work 7x15hr days without a weekly rest? My guess is plenty.
