The only issue with Windows updates is the user who fails to make a full backup of their system before updating... with a backup, no matter what, you can revert to the original system in a few minutes.

I have one Dell desktop, one Asus laptop and 2 Acer laptops in the family. The only issue I had updating any of them to “2004” was the graphics card and a multi RS232 external box with the Dell desktop, both issues were easily resolved with drivers from the manufacturers.
Most people aren't tech savvy though. And i wouldnt say it isnt a problem as it shouldn't need to be fixed. I had my previous system for over 10 years and didnt get a single issue from the many updates over the years. With windows 10 it seems almost famous for having screwed up updates.

Is a full backup the one that appears in the Settings>Update and Security, or is it something quite different?

    Looking for an older backup
    Go to Backup......
Then this and Create a system image .... or use a third party free backup

I noticed that the Backup only seemed to save user files, and not the operating system.
By then going to 'Looking for an older backup' you have the means of saving the operating system with 'Create a system image'.
    Is that the idea?

"System image" is the operating system.   Try it (to a spare hard disk)

But you can only 'Create a system image' by going to 'Looking for an older backup' .
    Is that right?

Another vote for Acronis, I make weekly full backups with it to an external USB powered hard disk drive. Used it for several years with zero problems.

A curious thing has happened. 2004 has been replaced in the available updates with a message saying it will appear there when it is ready for my system.
