I suspect RumRat is a person after my own heart :)
Mind, I created my own restore point before I went for it and made sure that my document backups on external drives were all up to date, supplemented with the back up of an ipad should carnage have ensued with the blue screen of death.
It did take a while, but I think all Windows users have learned the hard way to be supremely patient!
It did install by the way without problem apart from one driver which Microsoft flagged up which required a short visit to manufacturer's website and very quick download and install.

Its so far a very slow roll out as their are problems .

and this is at the heart of my issue. how can i know when the risk has gone down to an acceptable level to try it.

You could just leave it to Microsoft!
From what I have read, Microsoft are well aware that there will be some driver issues with certain computers, hence the slow roll out. I believe the theory is that if your setting gives control of the download process to Windows, rather than a user forcing the issue, then you will receive it when they think you are ready, i.e all driver issues have been resolved.
That's what I do - nothing. If it wants to update it just gets on with it.

When the trauma of having to reload everything following a disastrous (made it to 97% installed, then failed to access the network card, so unable to complete Win 10 and unable to roll back to Win 7) attempt to update from Win 7 to Win 10 2004 finally wears off, I'll risk updating to 1909 and then see what people say about the next version.
It shouldn't have to be like this.
At least my data was on a second drive and the first one is now a lot leaner.

I start my testing on my own PC almost as soon as the stable version is released.  Then I wait for a month or two after reading the nightmares online, just to let the dust settle - by which time it's usually safe to install.
If possible, make a complete backup of your system before installing any new versions of Windows.  Again, if possible, do a clean installation and carefully explore the new settings so you can adjust any new changes to suit you.  Again a clean install is a little more work, but the results are worth it.

Indeed, i never had any update issues with my previous system. Since i got a windows 10 system all i seem to see is news stories on how theres a problem with the latest update. Having said that the only update issue i have had with my current system was with an update for a graphics driver.
  • The only issue with Windows updates is the user who fails to make a full backup of their system before updating... with a backup, no matter what, you can revert to the original system in a few minutes.

I have one Dell desktop, one Asus laptop and 2 Acer laptops in the family. The only issue I had updating any of them to “2004” was the graphics card and a multi RS232 external box with the Dell desktop, both issues were easily resolved with drivers from the manufacturers.

A laptop I was sortig (new ssd) has updated a few days ago. It took a few updates till it was 'happy'.
Apart from the changes forced on us bu úsoft similar to those mentioned (gui presentational, their own apps, defaults) which I find annoying all has gone well. Quite an old laptop by the way!

Mine has an additional graphics card, fitted by Dell. It’s an AMD Radeon. Windows update replaced the graphics driver with a generic Windows one, which results in the dual monitor setup not being recognised. It’s happened on previous Windows updates... nothing specific to the “2004” version.
