It is a worry, though, isn't it? And at a time when you really need your mind putting at rest. I think everyone should be treated the same wherever they live. Ask your doc anyway. At the worst s/he'll say no.

We do worry when we're pregnant don't we? If I hadn't had to have so many scans (for placenta previa) I would've paid for one of those 3D scans. They're bloomin expensive but I reckon it's worth it to see that the baby's got arms, legs, fingers and toes.....and to bond with your bump.

The thing is that it's a really exciting time and most of us just want to see our baby cos not only do we want to make sure that things are ok, but we can't wait another 4 and a half months to see the little blighter :D

    Go on.....pay £300 for a 3D scan :D :money:
Just run, run and keep on running!

I have had one at 12 weeks & one at 22 weeks in Surrey but I know it does vary area to area, also not all areas will tell you the sex, some it is policy not to tell you.

There was a recent thread either on this board or the health board on prices for private scans & some people managed to find some very good deals, worth a search if you are serious about one.

thanks for the replies, it just seems that if your in the midlands your only entitled to the one, oh well better dig deep for a private one.
    cheers

i'm in the midlands, different trusts must have different rules ... here the standard is one at 12 weeks and one at 20 weeks. some people have had early scans if they have bleeding or ectopic is suspected. there are various medical reasons for having extra scans, in my case because the baby is considered small. i'm not sure that measuring height of fundus with a tape measure is too accurate though to be honest. they start doing that at around 24 weeks here and if the measurement is too big or too small for the weeks pregnant you are there's a growth scan. i think what's considered an abnormal measurement varies too, i read the bounty forums and people are saying their measurements are out be 4 or 5 weeks yet nobody seems worried. i got a growth scan when my first tummy measurement was 3 cm too small. same thing happened in my other pregnancy, small tummy, 5 scans, healthy 6lb baby. this baby is estimated for 6lb at full term too. i don't think that's small and it's lovely having 5 scans again this time, but i do feel a bit guilty that i'm getting all of these extras as 'routine' - the scan unit seems busy and the radiographer said she doubted i'd need to come back but the consultant said they were 'duty bound' to scan me again, the doppler scan to check blood flow to baby was 'routine' too, it feels a bit wierd that i get so many scans when there's clearly nothing wrong with the baby, the radiographer seemed a bit miffed that she was so overworked due to the consultant being over cautious. the doctors and midwives don't even think i need to be seeing a consultant, everything is because the baby is on the bottom of the scale weight-wise. another trust might not so overcautious.

    i think if i hadn't had a 20 week scan i'd have paid for a 3D scan.

Hi, I'm in Bristol and here you aren't entitled to one at 12 weeks but you are at 20 weeks. We decided to have the OSCAR scan done privately at 12 weeks which was great for putting our minds at rest that there really was something in there!

If you're sure you won't get a 20 week scan, check your local BUPA place and they'll tell you how much it would be for one via them.

Well down here in Portsmouth we only have a 16 week scan - just to be awkward. They won't tell you the sex either.

Didn't really bother me as I knew no better.

In this area I was lucky enough to have a dating scan at 12 weeks ish and also a 20 week scan but it does depend on local health autorities. i know that you can pay for 3d/4d scans in some areas if you are prepared to do this, although I believe it's quite expensive. Usually the back of baby mags have adverts for these places.

Crikey - I'm really lucky - on all of mine, I had one at 8wks sh to make sure I was pregnant, it was AOK and to date it, went back at 12/14 weeks to check all AOK and again at 20 weeks to check all AOK and tell me the sex!

Its amazing what you get in other areas!

It was the same for us. My wife had a scan at 8 weeks, 12(ish) weeks and 20 weeks. At the 20 week scan we were informed 'it's definitely a boy - I can see his goolies'. The wonders of modern technology :D

    I'm in Cardiff & I had a 12-week dating scan and a 20-week anomaly scan as standard.

I also had an early scan at 7 weeks, but that was only because I had IVF treatment & they need to make sure there is an ongoing pregnancy in case your hormone levels are indicating pregnancy but there's nothing actually there.
I think everyone should be entitled to the 20-week scan, as that's the one where they can really look in detail at the baby & can detect certain posiible problems.
  • My geography is terrible but there is a place called Proscan in Nottingham do 3/4D scans- I only paid £100 a couple of years ago so shouldnt be too much more now- if thats any help
Always on the hunt for a bargain!!!!
