Driving Licence Renewal - over 70

My driving licence (just for a car) expires in six weeks time when I turn 73yrs of age. I renewed it on-line 3yrs ago at the age of 70yrs but my most recent attempt on-line tells me "Licence cannot be renewed. Your licence is no longer valid and must be renewed". My licence IS valid until 1707.20 and I have a valid passport. The 7 month extension period for renewals (because of Covid-19) apparently doesn't include my situation. The DVLA help lines and webchat are not available at the moment. Any ideas?

My dad posted his licence to DVLA at the end of March for its 3 year renewal, it expires on 11th June. He has heard nothing. I  check every day for him on `check my driving licence`  in the hope it might be processed but he is not holding out a lot of hope of it being returned any time soon  :o

Do you get a reminder when it is due?

You certainly do in 'normal' times. About three months ahead.

  • I got a reminder about 3 months before my 70th birthday but I haven't received one for my 73rd which is now only about 6 weeks away. Regarding the eyesight & health form - I remember doing it for my 70th but it doesn't appear to be part of the online form any more.

I wonder why DVLA Swansea (Wales) may not be working as normal currently...?

Do you think it could have anything to do with the fact that they state they aren't processing ANY postal applications AT ALL currently?

I have just applied for my new one today ,i will be 70 in July ,application on line very straightforward and says new licence will be with me in about 2 weeks but can still drive on my old licence till the new one arrives.
Only drawback with doing it on line is you  lose the trailer and 7.5 tonne truck categories off your licence ,doubt if i will ever be asked to drive a truck again anyway

I think you lose them anyway at 70 unless you jump through a few more hoops.

Did you get the reminder through the post that comes a couple of months before your old one expires or did you just apply anyway.
