How financially illiterate must some people be not to know how a debit card works given the dominance of online transactions and freely available information an the internet.

How hard can it be to wean yourself off a credit card for daily spends and use your debit card instead? Many monthly/adhoc  bills can also be paid using a DC now instead of a DD.
Or use credit card for cashback & pay credit card off using debit card.

The only reasons I've ever used a credit card is for cashback or stoozing. When debit cards start offering that at equivalent or better incentives than credit cards (or cashback/0% cards die out completely), then I'll stop spending on my credit card altogether. Obviously it's good to retain the facility available for emergencies.
There are many ways one could transact £500 on a debit card without spending any money. It's being increasingly common for companies to offer debit card payments as an alternative to money transfers. There's no reason to forego cashback or interest to qualify for this incentive, at least currently. I am doing almost all my spending on credit cards, not least for items where I want Section 75 cover, and for cashback. I also don't see any reason for replacing my automated DDs with manual DC payments. I appreciate YMMV but rest assured, financial illiteracy is not the reason for my approach.
