Household Plumbing

Options
Hello,
Amongst other things in my house, I'm looking to replace the entire plumbing system because:
-Radiators are all way too small
-Various small drippy leaks
-The only drinkable water in the house comes from the cold kitchen tap and this annoys me
-Heat only boiler - I want a combi boiler
-Immersion heater - I want a combi boiler
I haven't done much plumbing at all but you've got to learn somewhere I guess.  I have millions of questions.  Where's a reliable place to find the answers?  Internet forums are divided on info.

  • I am also planning on doing everything except the final terminations with plastic push fit pipes and fittings.
So the first thing in the system would be a 25x15 plastic stopcock like this:

I'd start with asking the person/persons who are doing the final terminations and fitting  the the boiler to see if they are happy with what you plan to do.

That's where you should always take your drinking water from, where else are you expecting it to be?

Also, unless you're  Gas Safe registered then you wont be doing everything on that list.

That cetainly used to be true as often the other taps were fed from a cold water storage tank.  All the cold taps in our house are fed directly from the mains supply so water from all taps is drinkable.

There's nothing to stop you running the pipework to radiators etc before getting someone in to fit the boiler. I'd be tempted to get someone out to give you quotes for both the boiler only install and doing the full job. You may find you won't save much by doing the pipework yourself as the plumber will get materials much cheaper than you can.

What Rob7475 said. Get 2 quotes, if a plumber is there fitting the boiler anyway, he may have a trainee or helper who he’ll leave to do the pipes, plus his reduced costs for materials may make it worth considering.  Failing that, YouTube has helped me loads with many home DIY tasks in the past.  Find a video with lots of views and ratings, watch it then check out the comments and find the basics on there

I'd like to be able to drink from the upstairs en suite at least because it's annoying having to go downstairs in the night if I forget to bring water upstairs with me, despite there being a tap next to the bed!!!  Anyway, this is a normal thing in most houses made nowadays.  All cold water is mains fed.  You could drink from your toilet'#s cistern if you wanted to.
I didn't say that I was planning on installing the boiler myself.  People love being argumentative don't they?

Yep.  I have a cold water tank in the loft which feeds everything except the kitchen cold tap. I've drunk from it before, but I'd rather not risk the runs.

I'll be doing the final terminations.  I'll do everything except the boiler gas installation.  I'll get a plumber type in to give me a quote for a boiler and try and learn as much as I can while they're here.

Do you mean you'll do everything except the gas boiler installation?

Unless you're gas safe registered which clearly you aren't then you shouldn't be removing the cover from the boiler.

So what you actually need need is someone to come in an fit the combi. Following that you will do ever else?

I don't expect they'll be too happy with you standing over them all day watching.
