Does anyone know if dvsa still automatically gives 6 months extention on MOT? My car's MOT is expiring on 29 May so don't know what to do.

You do nothing unless you want to MOT it now. Find an MOT station open (there are lots of them).

Noticed today that several have large boards saying open for MOT's.

Yes, they are. It'll show as extended a few days before the expiry.

That doesn't mean that you can't get it re-tested (and if you do it before the change, the usual retention of the old expiry date will still apply), and it doesn't mean that you can let the condition slip... It still needs to be fully roadworthy at all times, which realistically means it should just pass. After all, MOT pass is a bare minimum, right...?

Thanks for your replies. What if they will not extend with the garages now being re-opened? I read they extend 7 days before the expire date. Had a look at their dvsa site and it does not say MOT extention is now finished?

Many MOT stations have never actually closed. The legislation allows for all MOTs due until the end of March 2021 to be extended by 6 months (will the computer be able to pick out those that have already been extended ?) and I suspect there will be plenty of notice given when the scheme will end.  Industry bodies are already screaming that they are losing business so no doubt the government will bow to pressure sooner rather than later.

Yes, easily. Just look at the test date...

But if, come late September, there's still a requirement for the extension because open test stations are scarce, then it would make sense to apply a second extension to those coming to the end of their first extension.

I foresee prosecutions for unroadworthy vehicles - and breakdowns - rising the longer this goes on...

I've got one that's just been extended in the last few days (it was due to expire tomorrow). What's interesting is that it's on the email MOT reminder service, which normally sends a reminder a month before, then a fortnight before. I've had nothing from that...

Emailed dvsa regarding this extention and they confirmed they are still extending "Your MOT expiry date will usually be updated on the day your MOT is due to expire."
Do they really do that extention on the expire date?

Just go get it MOTed as normal ( well not normal but you know what I mean) if you have problems re health then just go with the extension.
My local garage has stayed open throughout, MOT has been done last month and they are fitting me some much needed tyres tomorrow.

I think, I'd rather wait just for the bank holiday to be over to see if it gets extended and if not then on Tuesday go to find somewhere to test. Just don't want to take the chance  if it gets extended on the last date or not.

No. The one I've got is due to expire tomorrow, and has already updated. I don't know when it updated, though.

And that's a car that's SORNed and off the road...

Thanks, by the look of it MOT gets automatically extended by their computerised system and definitely not on the last day as they said in their email..
