Whirlpool recall problems

Hello all.

Looking for some advice please.

Our washing machine was part of the recent fire safety recall. We went through the procedure and because of the coronavirus was given the choice of waiting until the pandemic finished for a repair and told not to use the machine until it was fixed as ant damage as a result of fire after being told not to use it wouldn't be covered or have a replacement machine like for like. Of course with 3 children the like for like option was taken.

We have had the machine delivered and it's awful! Firstly the colour isn't right as we had a all black and this one has a big grey door.

But more importantly alot of the wash functions are different with most 60° washes taking approx 4 hours! Where as our previous machine could do it in 1 hour.

Of course I contacted whirlpool to ask what my options were and was transferred to no less then 5 departments.

After finally getting to the "right" department they were extremely rude and I quote " once you have it you have to keep it" after telling me this, the call was terminated by their end. So I called back, expressed my disgust and that the replacement isn't fit for purpose and got told " you have to keep it"

I then asked for the manager, and was told they wont speak on the phone.

I asked for the complaint address or email so I could put it in writing, the response I got was " you will have to go get it"

This went on for quite some time before they again cut me off.

What are my rights with this?? Please help me!!!!!!

The settings were checked. Given that it stated what cycles but not time it takes and also that it has a rapid function to shorten wash cycles. However what it doesn't tell you is that the rapid button only works on 3 of the 14 odd wash cycles so is near useless.

I also had a replacement machine that wasn't as good, although I decided I could live with it as I rarely use the 60 degree wash anyway.
What about the steam hygiene function - could you use that instead on a shorter wash?
There is a FB group I was a member of called something like whirlpool hot point creda recall support group uk, although I can't see it anymore since I left so don't know if they're made it private. If you can find it I'd suggest there is more knowledge on there than here with regards to what people have found successful.

If I recall rightly though, if you've accepted and used it there's really no comeback. A handful of people managed to get a refund on their credit card or a better spec. machine but I think they had all refused thr replacement,  not accepted and had second thoughts.

  • Thanks for the info,

We kind of felt pushed to accept as a household of 5 with no washing machine wasnt great and we got all this info during the first week of lockdown, so with the worry of it catching fire we were almost left with no choice. Otherwise we probably would have looked at a replacement elsewhere to and then claim a refund back or something.

How long had you owned the original machine?  If it was for a reasonable time (say 12 months or more) then as a family of five, it has probably done a lot of work in that time. To get a brand new replacement is a pretty good deal.

Why is a long wash cycle a problem?  Most modern machines use a long cycle to limit water and power use, so it will save you a small amount of money in its lifetime.  If it has a delay start function, just program it to start and end when convenient.  I can't see why a four hour wash cycle is a problem.

The four hour wash cycle is a issue for us because with having 3 smaller children, alot of the time we dont have the luxury of being able to wait around four hours for football kits, baby clothes, school clothes etc..

I always has the theory the longer the machine runs for the more water and power it would consume?

Not necessarily but there are many variables.  Quick washes (like the one hour you mention) sometimes limit the weight of washing you can put in, so any saving in power and water is lost by having to do more loads.  Short cycles aren't as effective, so for the sorts of things you're talking about: sports kit, baby clothes (basically heavily-soiled stuff) you're not getting as much "cleaning for your money" and may have to use more powder, wash again, etc.  On mine, the 'eco 40' cycle takes 60 minutes longer than the 'standard 40' cycle but uses less power and water, according to the manual.  Same with the 'eco 60' versus 'standard 60' cycles.

Personally, I use the eco 40 cycle on mine, with a hot wash in an empty machine once a month to clean it out.  It takes 2h45m and does a good job.  I air-dry my washing so at this time of year I dial the spin speed right down to 700 or even 500 to save energy but more importantly, wear on the motor and bearings.  The top speed of 1400rpm is completely unnecessary.

When it comes to timing, it's just a matter of scheduling.  Unless you are literally out of clothes until the cycle is finished I can't see the problem, especially since for a family of five, there's probably not enough capacity for a full set of clothes for each person in one load.

The other option is to get a new non-Whirlpool machine and just sell yours on.
I do agree the information that was given when decided whether to accept the offered model was scant and it was impossible to tell which cycles could be shortened. And quite frankly given Whirlpool's dismal performance so far with both washer and dryer fire risks, there is no way I would either put it on when leaving the house or overnight anymore. I don't trust them enough.

Old one have HOT & Cold fill.
new one will be cold fill only. So will take longer to heat water.
M-I-L has one. Just replaced it a whlle ago. Did not read manual. Thought that the cycles on the dial were the same as the old one, and she complained about the time it took.
Dug out manual and showed her. Cut the time massively.

Also why 60 degree? Use lower temps and it will take a lot less time.
