I have always been intrigued by the Haynes manual. It gives you all the tips on fuel efficiency and then says: "Driving techniques associated with good fuel economy tend to involve moderate acceleration and low top speeds. Be considerate to the needs of other road users who may need to make brisker progress; even if you do not agree with them this is not an excuse to be obstructive." What does it mean? We have told you how to be fuel efficient but please don't do it? Please don't obey speed limits? If there is someone close behind speed up?
If you are serious, it means don’t be an !!!!!! and pull away from the lights at a snail’s pace when there are people around you, or drive at 30mph on w country road that is perfectly safe at 60:if you are holding people up.
If you hold everybody up you help them to improve their efficiency too. You should think more "saving the planet" rather than just your own fuel bill.
Are you the kind to flash and gesticulate at people when they do eventually overtake, fed up of your snail's pace?
I find that if I swerve violently to the right as they attempt to overtake that blocks their attempts to drive inefficiently and helps save the planet that we all have to live on.
    Either you are trolling.....

Or you shouldn't be allowed to drive with that attitude.
I think it's fairly obviously Fred's attempt at humour.

People like you are one of the reasons that I think it worth paying extra for a powerful car which accelerates well; I’m generally able to overtake safely pretty soon after you decide to be so selfish.

Of course you then turn up behind me in a 30mph limit, wearing a hat and seeming annoyed as I’m actually doing 30.
  • Very often the people who are speeding past you have had to break quite hard to stop at the lights. These people don’t know how to read the road and wear their cars out quicker and use more fuel than necessary.
  • I hope all of us are aware of the reasons why 'failing to make progress' or similar I said a fail on the driving test.

.......and I am surprised how many posters appear to be advocating driving in a way that would be a fail in a driving test.

In the driving test it is appropriate speed and undue hesitation.

    They don't work.
Save your money and buy more fuel with it.
There are the fuel system cleaners that, as manufacturer signed, can save up to 20 gallons every 10000 miles for the price below $14 if talk about Royal Purple additive...
I think it can save some bucks and clean up some internal engine systems.
What? Sounds like snake oil. Are the returns guaranteed?
I suppose you tried, if not - you are welcome to try any of the additives you might like or choice by your own criteria)) So you can privide us a result of testings, or tell us that manufacturers do a mistake to declare that parameters, that they are declared...

What if they get through the green light, and you have to stop? They've actually saved fuel by not having to stop and start. That's reading the road. And it's brake, not break.

Well yes the driver that got through the light would save fuel but if your a good driver you can 'gauge' when lights will change and adjust your driving to suit. If I'm approaching traffic lights and I can see (cant always see that far ahead of course) that they're on green I still carry on at same speed no flooring it to get through and if they stay green no problem, IF I see them change to red I immediately dip the clutch (not technically driving standard I know) and coast to a stop.

The amount of drivers I see race up to a red light and slam on the brakes always makes me laugh especially when I look across at them with that 'well done' face I give. It still all boils down to driving in a proper manner, if you catch a set of lights on green and maintain the speed limit for that stretch of road you 'usually' catch them all on green, nuff said.

Yes, gauging the lights works both ways. i was pointing out that driving faster is sometimes the way to save fuel!
