Im glad i kept my nerve and faith with Nintendos comment that there would be more uk deliveries week before xmas. Got mine from Amazon £179.99 but just seen them in Tesco Warrington and Game station Warrington. First thing i did when i got in was check out ebay and i guess it must be simular stories nation wide. Just watched several wiis on ebay reach £180 plus postage. Seller set reserve so not sold but they will still need to pay listing fee and pay to list again if they have bought to re sell. There are also over 8000 wiis listed on ebay so maybe us genuine buyers will get some revenge on carpet baggers:beer:
  • Not out to cause trouble here, but....

Please don't knock all the Ebayers out there. Maybe people are in the same position as me, having not taken the chance with the possibilty of online orders being cancelled ( indeed one of mine was after 3 weeks ), ordered from a couple of retailers and have ended up with a spare console !

I've offered my spare on here for cost price, sadly no takers, the stores won't take them back, so I may have to resort to Ebay.

I'd hate for people on here to single my listing out and have a good laugh at my expense if it sold for less than the original cost.

Anyways, no trouble intended with this post... Merry Christmas all :D

As a customer, but I understand marketing a great deal more.

I never said Nintendo was turning up production to flood the shops. Like all "must have" toy manufacturers at Xmas they deliberately withhold supply in the run-up, drip feeding bits of stock into the market to keep the hype going.

Sorry I don't see where you get the idea from. It may be what you think is happening, but Nintendo are getting no benefit.

The NY time was reporting Nintendo may lose out significantly due to the shortages http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/14/technology/14wii.html?_r=3&pagewanted=1&ref=business&oref=slogin&oref=slogin

The BBC interviewed Nintendo's UK distrribution bod who said they were in short supply back in november http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/talking_point/7095237.stm

So is it a Nintendo generated conspiracy or just the fact they can't make them fast enough? Nintendo have made 17 million of them this year, they were planning on making 14million, thats a 3 million increase on what they planned, and still there are shortages. All the last year often they were sold out in stores, not just now but all year. Nintendo have hit the market for six, the fact they are getting into places like retirement homes just shows how well they are selling.

I wish people would just sit and think. Every Xmas it's the same, the makers are trying to create a shortage to punt up prices. Rubbish, it's the end buyers doing it, cant see it in store, read the hype in the sun, mirror or mail and panic and hit ebay. The Makers just want to sell as many units as possible, Nintendo make money on every unit selling it in to the retail channel, they make the same if it retails for £179 or £1000 the retailers are setting the frankly silly prices, but the end buyers are paying it.

So tell me who's generating the shortage, evil corporations or stupid punters panic buying.

i think it's perhaps incorrect to say they have been sold out all year, you could easily walk into any games shop during the summer and easily pick up a wii.
    helpful tips
    it's spelt d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y
there - 'in or at that place'
    their - 'owned by them'
    they're - 'they are'
it's bought not brought (i just bought my chicken a suit from that new shop for £6.34)
  • Gamestation in Stafford had a sign in the window this afternoon saying that had stock.

They make money by holding up the RRP and making wholesalers pay top dollar for kit. They also take royalties for game titles sold with their consoles. They restrict supply to help the PR story about theirs being the product everyone wants.
They even launched a TV advert campaign at a time when they knew the shops were unable to get their stock, then put out a press release saying they might have to pull the adverts because they were unable to keep up with demand.
This is NOT a case of stupid punters - this is very clever marketing on the part of one of the games console manufacturers.
