Do you actually understand retail???Why would Nintendo want to create a shortage? The don't make any more money from it,
A couple of weeks before Xmas Nintendo open the floodgates and grateful parents buy up the entire amount of stock, together with games (as bundles) which they clear at full price instead of having to discount.
Sony did exactly the same thing with the PS2 Slimline when it launched - they made up a story about the boat bringing them to England being stuck in the Suez Canal. When it "reached England" they flooded the shops and coined it in.
If they didn't do this you would have shops with ample supplies of Wiis, Xboxes, PS3s and PS2s. Parents have plenty of choice and might pick the wrong one i.e. a Sony one! And even more of a worry for a manufacturer - they might be seen to offer a product which anyone could own, and people might choose to wait until the January sales before buying it.
This has always been the way of the Christmas toy hype, and as long as you know this you shouldn't panic. You don't get medals for sitting in the trenches.0 -
Do you actually understand retail???
Nintendo and the distributers have no interest in creating a shortage, they sell the console at a cost price, regardless of the amount available. At the moment they'd rather have stock selling than not. Remember most games consoles (not the wii though) are sold as a loss leader and the games bring in the big profits.
You cannot just up production at a moments notice, Components have to be ordered, especially as many places use "Just in Time" manufacturing they probably don't have a stockpile of components other than to last a few days of production. Production lines cannot be made faster just because there is a shortage, and if they have shipped something by sea they can't speed the boat up. Anything from China will be on at least 2 months lead time,
Retailers on the otherhand can set proices how they see fit, they are the one's taking in extra profit per console. Lets say Nintendo sell them to the retailer at £150 the retailers sell them for £180 thats £30 profit. If they sell them at £250 thats £100 profit for the retailer and Nintendo see's nothing of it.
Why would Nintendo want to create a shortage? The don't make any more money from it, Sure it creates a buzz, but theres no point creating a buzz if they can't supply the goods. It makes no sense, they want the consoles out there so you buy there software, not have people be told it's out of stock and potentially be upsold to a Xbox 360 or PS3.
thats not stricty true , nintendo keep supplies tight early in the christmas rush making a shortage , as has been seen , some on ebay start making a good profit and demand spirals and a shortage occurs , even making national news headlines , and cheap advertising ,kids suddenly want the latest cant get hold of console and pester power creeps in , why else stop amazon de and amazon fr and the rest selling to uk at the end of november ,
Then when everyone has it in the front of their mind that their going to be short ,start shipping into the uk ,carefully controlling numbers (consoles possibly held back in warehouses in europe ) .
i think what we have recenty seen is a very clever marketing ploy using ebay as a springboard .selling far more numbers of consoles than would have been in the first place , and dont forget that nintendo get a royalty from the games sold as well .0 -
HMV in Reading were selling the Wii today but only as part of a deal: Console, any 3 games and an extra controller for £275.
I didn't buy because I only want 1 extra game at the moment, Mario Galaxy, and they seemed to be sold out of that anyway. Plenty of people were picking up their 3 games and heading for the till though! (I'm only buying it for my own selfish enjoyment so I won't be especially peeved if I don't have one by Xmas).
Zavvi (formerly Virgin Megastore) appeared to be doing a similar deal: console and 5 games for £350 (eek!).
So Amazon at midnight is a good place to look if I want to order, judging by the past couple of days?0
