  • @Sistergold Congratulations on the re-mortgage & overpayment. Very satisfying to be hitting those targets.

I was reading the same thread as you this morning. It is difficult for anyone to buy in London, so much competition and the prices are extortionate. I too believe the stamp duty holiday has a lot to be said for causing more problems than it is helping! So yes definitely try to stay clear until this has ended.

From my end my little investment property is now on the market, had lots of interest. The letting agency has a family going through tenancy checks so i'm just awaiting move in dates to sort out insurance etc and oh the pleasure of not having to pay bills on the property :)

Received a mini inheritance last week, nothing life changing but a bit extra to add to the house deposit fund for home to live in.

On the garden front - had a fun this morning planting seedlings in the veggie plot at home so all in all not bad at the moment.

Good morning, as of Thursday evening i now own my house, and the XH has been removed off the deeds.  I am now looking for a mortgage and new home if i can get the mortgage needed.  I am not too worried about the stamp duty at the moment, i just want out of here.  I have the money set aside for the stamp duty if i need to pay.  I have a lot of painting to do and decluttering  before it can go on the market.  Although i have had plenty of time throughout lockdown i haven't had the umph to do it, and probably wont until i know i can get a mortgage, and then it will be all go.
@slm6002  congratulations 🥳 that’s great news! A big step in the right direction having XH off the house deeds! Clean up, tidy up and move on I guess! Good luck with the mortgage!
I know what you mean by not just getting the umph to do anything! After sometime though just force yourself to do bits as even if you don’t get a mortgage and you stay a bit longer than you want it will make the place nicer for you to hang on to a bit and also easier to sell should you suddenly get the mortgage! Thank you to you both - will wait for the mortgage advisor to call me as she now has my paperwork and then it will be either do up house to how i like it or sell and move to a house more suitable and nothing to do with XH.

  • Just read through whole thread...what an inspiring read! Well done SG on making such huge strides in overpaying your mortgage, so impressive.

I’m a single mum to a large family and have been single now for over 4 years. It’s been a battle to sort out the finances and I now have a court date to sort it out after trying unsuccessfully to go through mediation with the ex. I’m hoping to be able to get a mortgage to enable me to either stay in the former marital home or buy elsewhere.

So inspiring to realise there are other single women tackling life and mortgages.

Fingers crossed the courts can sort it out for you.  I was very lucky my XH was very nieve when it came to money and when he suggested a figure i jumped on it as i was expecting to pay more :)

Hello @Honeysucklelou2 and wellcome to this singles/ladies thread. Money can be such a problem to sort out with Ex but it will have to get sorted in the end. The courts should be able to sort it out and no matter how it goes, fair, unfair or whatever in the end one is just glad when it’s all concluded so that you can move on and know what’s yours. Good luck with the courts and please keep us updated!
Thank you for your positive comments and it’s nice to know that I am encouraging other ladies that it can be done no matter how difficult.
It does get better in the end especially with the children in the whole mix. I never thought I will get to a happy place but does feel good knowing all I have is now just mine.

  • Hi @Honeysucklelou2, I didn't go through the courts but think I just caved in and agreed on a lower sum than I now realised I was worth (and now have regrets about). Anyway putting all that aside life has got better and calmer. Best wishes for court and whatever outcome you can make this work and get to the place you want to be.

  • Thank you for your welcome and  good wishes. Unfortunately the ex wouldn’t enter into any kind of discussion about the future, either informally face to face or through mediation, so the court step has been a reluctant necessity. At the moment there is an interest only mortgage on the property, so I am very conscious that it’s a financial timebomb and would really like to get it sorted so that I can remortgage ASAP to a repayment mortgage.

That is tough @Honeysucklelou2, if this can be any comfort to you. I knew I couldn't afford to keep my house and my ex could so I agreed to be bought out. I really regret this decision but I couldn't see anyway out and now completely priced out of my local area. I've taken an alternative path involving an investment property in a different area to bolster a deposit for an eventual home to live in. Its really tough now but you'll get there.

    @Honeysucklelou2 and @Queen_of_the_Hive
I think as woman we go through life and make concessions and decisions for the sake of peace and sometimes out of emotions when we just want it to all end. On hindsight there can be regrets but in the grand scheme of things one is better off moving on and starting over sooner than later. Most times as a woman if you have children financially no matter what we are at a disadvantage. All this makes us stronger and we eventually stabilise and might end up better off than the Ex.
One sure way to be financially on top is interacting with others like we do here and make the best of starting again!

@Queen_of_the_Hive investing elsewhere was a good idea rather than accepting being priced out!

    Laddies you are strong! Xx
