Fibre broadband deals

I was searching for fibre broadband deals and the best seemed to be Shell at £15.66 a month based on £23.99 but factoring £100 cadhback. However when I tried to sign up it was actually £31.99 a month and the £23.99 was the price after factoring in the £100 cashback. Still decent but not the bargain I was expecting. Is this an MSE mistake, my mistake or Shell not being straight? Info appreciated please.

I found the same yesterday. Its confusing as to whether the £31.99 is the price then £22.99 is what you pay after the £100 cashback. I assumed 31.99 is the full price, 22.99 is a reduced price then you also get the £100 cashback but it really isnt clear.

Most of the Shell Energy offers on the MSE Broadband Unbundled Deals page have a question mark next to the line "Effective monthly cost" which says:
    Effective monthly cost
Deals often offer 'rewards' such as cashback, or a voucher which you can claim. If so, we subtract the value of these 'rewards' from the total price you'd pay over the contract (including any upfront delivery or activation costs), then divide that by the number of months to show you how much in effect you're paying each month. In order to factor in the reward, it must either be cashback or a voucher that can be spent on a wide range of goods.
Which makes what's going on pretty clear, it seems to me.

We can all read what the mse site says, its the Shell site that ultimately needs to be understood as that’s what is being signed up to. A few months ago the mse site stated a £75 offer which on the shell site had been replaced with a £25 voucher. The offer had ended before stated on mse. I suspect mse would approve of querying anything you're unsure of rather than having blind faith in them.

You're now making a different point to the one you made in your post. In your post you said:

That's the point I was responding to. No one's saying that you shouldn't confirm the pricing and availability of an offer with the provider.

Its the same point, the difference is you realising I was referring to what’s on the Shell site and not what’s on mse.

I see this thread was started in Apr, but I'm still confused looking at the prices in Oct.
MSE says Shell costs £15.66 for Superfast Fibre Broadband (after deducting a £100 incentive), but when you click thro to Shell, they say the cost is £23.99 after deducting the £100.  Are there TWO lots of £100 to be taken off or are my moneysaving instincts running away with me :-)
This is what appears on MSE: Via our Shell Energy* link, you'll pay £23.99/mth, but you'll get £100 bill credit within three months of your service going live. This makes it a total outlay of £187.88 over the 12-month contract, equivalent to £15.66/mth.
    Ends 11.59pm Mon 5 Oct.

I think they mean not that the price already includes a £100 deduction but that the price is £23.99 and the package will include a £100 bill credit. I agree it sounds ambiguous. The pdf linked to from the order page does make it clearer and confirms mse customers are exempt from the cancellation charge so it would be well worth keeping and filing away.

  • this offer from shell is pure deception MSE should remove this offer instead of ignoring complaints since april, ive just signed up for this offer and as i cant get clarification from shell i intend to cancel.
