Beware Argos not refunding or replacing faulty items until stores reopen

We recently puchased a lawnmower from Argos click and collect. The first use it stopped working within 30mins. Argos are now saying that they are not accepting any returns or refunds for faulty items until their stores reopen . I am livid if they are selling items that you can collect from their sainsbury stores then my argument is they should also use those lorries to return faulty goods . We cannot afford to buy a new lawnmower and I cannot get a refund or replacement from argos
So now we have had our consumer rights removed. Will never buy another item from argos

Can I ask is it an electric lawn mower?  They will stop after a certain time to "cool down" but will go again next day.

Being fair very few retailers are accepting returns at the moment - you chose to buy a non-essential item and now you have to accept the issues that go with it.

Their website is (or at least was) clear about this situation pre-purchase and they've confirmed they'll be refunding/accepting returns as soon as stores reopen.

Your 'consumer rights' are temporarily restricted at a time of global pandemic - no need for the over-reaction but I'm sure they'll be mourning you as an ex-customer

They have no idea if you are infected or a carrier.

I wouldn't , as a responsible employer, be risking my van drivers health collecting possibly contaminated return items.

How have they been "removed"? They've just been delayed. Your consumer rights don't include any particular timescales to get returns sorted out.

Just as Argos chose to sell a non essential item.

but they do include a timescale in which a refund for faulty goods must be provided.

So are you psychic? No, therefore do not tell me what is essential or not for my circumstances .

They do for faulty goods, as do 'distance selling' rules . No laws have been amended to delay these . Therefore Argos should not be selling online if they are not prepared to refund faulty goods

In practice (as with many other things) the required timescale is "no slower than court action would take". There's no additional penalty for being slow in payment.

I'm genuinely curious as to under what circumstances a lawnmower is an essential purchase.

Well as a wheelchair user myself, nope, still not essential.
