Hi, we're supposed to be completing soon and our cooker hood has stopped working. The electrician we normally use said it sounds like it needs replacing but he cant come round until lockdown is eased. if we complete before we can get it fixed am I best just leaving some money for the new buyers? what would you do?

I'd fix it myself - I would guess just the motor needing replaced? I presume you haven't exchanged?.

Yeah sorry, should have added that I'm useless at anything DIY. Suppose to be exchanging and completing on the same day (early next week)davidmcn said:I'd fix it myself - I would guess just the motor needing replaced? I presume you haven't exchanged?.

Slightly off topic, but I don't believe this is a thing, only people who think that DIY is some form of art. It's not, it's something that is learnt. Now years ago, that was hard, as to learn you needed night courses or at least a few books. But nowadays with the internet there's pretty much nothing that a layman cant do.TheRealM said:Yeah sorry, should have added that I'm useless at anything DIY.
My mum (65) recently moved house, never done a DIY thing in her life as it was "husbands job". Using youtube she's changed the locks, tiled a bathroom, changed the downstairs sockets, put up countless shelves and cupboards. Shes become a right wizz, and it's all just following step by step youtube videos.2 -
It could just be the fuse that needs changing.

Yeah its a good point and I'm going to try and become better. I just don't have the patience though and feel like I wont do a good job (because most of the time I don't). You can definitely learn more but some people just have the natural knack and it comes easier to them. My dad was rebuilding car engines at 16, I wouldn't know where to start0 -
Find another electrician. They are allowed to work as long as they practice social distancing measures.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear1

When things stop working completely, it's usually a simple fault. Does the light still work? Does it work on any speed? Did it make any funny noises (rattling etc) the last time you used it? Have you taken the filter out to have a look inside? Is it ducted to outside or does it just recirculate? Is there a fused spur for it nearby, have you checked the fuse? What make/model is it?Signature on holiday for two weeks1
